Is the musical adaptation of the 2001 French film Amélie, which recently completed a limited engagement at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California, eyeing a Broadway bow?

According to a recent interview with the production's director and Tony Award winner Pam MacKinnon, she hopes to bring the new musical to the Great White Way in Spring 2017.

Amélie features music by Daniel Messé, lyrics by Nathan Tysen and a book by Craig Lucas.

Although no indication of casting has been given, the Berkeley Rep staging featured West End star Samantha Barks in the title role, alongside Adam Chanler-Berat, Randy Blair, Alison Cimmet, Carla Duren, John Hickok, Alyse Alan Louise and Paul Whitty.

Synopsis: "The musical is a whimsical depiction of contemporary Parisian life, set in Montmartre. It tells the story of a shy waitress, who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better, while struggling with her own isolation."

Samantha Barks rose to fame in the UK as a finalist on the BBC talent show "I'd Do Anything." Her West End credits include 'Les Misérables' and 'City of Angels.' She also performed in the UK tours of 'Cabaret' and 'Oliver!' and the Hollywood Bowl staging of 'Chicago.' She also portrayed the character of Éponine in the 2012 film adaptation of "Les Misérables."
