Exit the King concludes its limited engagement on Broadway

The Broadway production of Eugene Ionescos Exit The King, starring Geoffrey Rush in his Tony Award winning role as 'King Berenger' concludes its limited engagement at the Ethal Barrymore Theatre on 14 Jun 2009. When the play closes it will have played 21 previews and 93 regular performance.

Translated by Neil Armfield and Geoffrey Rush and directed by Neil Armfield, Exit The King opened at the Barrymore Theatre on 26 Mar 2009, following previews from 7 Mar 2009, for a limited engagement through to 14 Jun 2009.

The play opened to mostly excellent reviews: "a dazzling experience" (newyorktheatreguide.com); "brutally funny revival." (NY Time); "a landmark production of a great play. Miss Exit the King at your peril." (Back Stage); "Geoffrey Rush earns the crown for Broadway's most entertaining despot." (NY1); "a fascinating revival" (AP); "the play's relevance is secondary to the virtuoso work of its lead actor, who unleashes a dazzling arsenal of mime, clowning and physical techniques to swerve in an instant between comedy and pathos" (Variety).

Directed by Neil Armfield Exit The King feature Geoffrey Rush (King Berenger), Susan Sarandon (Queen Marguerite) Lauren Ambrose (Queen Marie), Andrea Martin (Juliette), William Sadler (Doctor) and Brian Hutchison (Guard).

In Exit The King, the heaters arent working, the sun wont rise, the throne rooms filthy and theres a great big crack opening up in the wall. Queen Marguerite is making preparations for the inevitable, but Queen Marie refuses to accept its time. Yet the signs are unmistakeable: King Berenger is dying. And hes not going to go gracefully.

Geoffrey Rush led a critically-acclaimed production of Exit The King, directed by Neil Armfield and produced by The Company B and Malthouse Theatre at the CUB Malthouse Theatre in Melbourne, Australia on 28 Mar 2007, and at Belvoir Street Theatre in Sydney, Australia on 13 Jun 2007.

Exit The King is produced on Broadway by Stuart Thompson, Robert Fox, Howard Panter, Tulchin/Bartner, Scott Rudin and The Shubert Organization.

The design team for Exit The King includes Dale Ferguson (Set & Costume), Damien Cooper (Lighting), Russell Goldsmith (Sound). John Rodgers is the Composer.
