Escape to Margaritaville is officially coming to Broadway

It has now been officially confirmed that the new musical Escape to Margaritaville, featuring the hits of singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett, will begin previews at Broadway's Marquis Theatre on February 16, 2018. An official opening is scheduled for March 15.

Escape to Margaritaville features a book by Emmy Award winner Greg Garcia and Emmy nominee Mike O'Malley. Mr. Buffett has also written original songs for the musical to accompany his back catalogue of hits.

Mr. Buffett released the following statement:

"Well, going to Broadway is a dream come true, but to be coming to the Marquis is like having a great margarita with a tequila floater. If we are going to turn the island of Manhattan into Margaritaville, Times Square seems the perfect place to drop anchor after our voyage from La Jolla, New Orleans, Houston and Chicago. I am grateful to all the wonderful people at all levels who participated in the hard work of turning a dream into reality. It's going to be a tropical season in New York. Fins Up!!!!"

Synopsis: "Imagine a place where the sun is hot, the ocean's warm, and the drinks are as cold as they are plentiful. Welcome to Margaritaville, the island paradise where city folk get away from it all and the locals get into the kind of trouble you can almost always sweet talk your way out of. This new musical is the story of a part-time bartender, part-time singer, and full-time charmer named Tully who thinks he's got life all figured out. Until a beautiful career-minded tourist steals his heart and makes him question everything."

Under the direction of Tony nominee Christopher Ashley, the creative team behind Escape to Margaritaville features choreography by Tony nominee Kelly Devine, music supervision by Tony nominee Christopher Jahnke, scenic design by Walt Spangler, costume design by Tony winner Paul Tazewell, lighting design by two-time Tony winner Howell Binkley, and sound design by two-time Tony winner Brian Ronan.

Escape to Margaritaville is currently staging its world premiere engagement at La Jolla Playhouse in California, which continues through to June 2017. The production will then play the following three pre-Broadway engagements:

- East Jefferson General Hospital Broadway in New Orleans/Saenger Theatre, New Orleans, Louisiana October 20 - 28, 2017

- BBVA Compass Broadway at the Hobby Center, Houston, Texas - October 31 - November 5, 2017

- Broadway In Chicago/Oriental Theatre, Chicago, Illinois - November 9 - December 3, 2017

Casting for the Broadway production will be confirmed at a later date.

Escape to Margaritaville is produced on Broadway by Frank Marshall, Mindy Rich, Anita Waxman, and Beth Williams.
