Last night, the New York Theatre Guide was invited to The 62nd Annual Drama Desk Awards, which took place at The Town Hall and was once again hosted by the utterly hilarious Michael Urie.

The evening kicked off with the cast of hit parody Spamilton, who explained the rules for the evening in true Gerard "Forbidden Broadway" Alessandrini-style. There were also performances of "Me and the Sky" by Come From Away star Jenn Colella, "I'm Breaking Down" by Falsettos' leading lady Stephanie J. Block, a rendition of "Omar Sharif" by The Band's Visit star Katrina Lenk and the cast of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical performed "Bring on the Monsters" from the recent off-Broadway production.

Hamilton leading man Brandon Victor Dixon also sang a beautiful version of "For All We Know" during the In Memoriam section of the ceremony.

The following awards were also presented by the Drama Desk at last night's ceremony:

SPECIAL AWARDS:
Each year, the Drama Desk votes special awards to recognize excellence and significant contributions to the theater.

Special Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble went to the ensemble of the Playwrights Realm production of The Wolves: Mia Barron, Brenna Coates, Jenna Dioguardi, Samia Finnerty, Midori Francis, Lizzy Jutila, Sarah Mezzanotte, Tedra Millan, Lauren Patten, and Susannah Perkins.

Special Drama Desk Award went to Phil LaDuca - "Proving that character comes from the ground up, the designer's innovative flexible dance shoe ensures that hoofers on any stage remain on point."

Sam Norkin Off-Broadway Award went to Lila Neugebauer - "During a season that saw her helm the original works The Antipodes, Everybody, Miles For Mary, and The Wolves, and resurrect the works of esteemed playwrights Edward Albee, Maria Irene Fornes, and Adrienne Kennedy in Signature Plays, director Lila Neugebauer has shown that her dauntless insight into the human condition knows no bounds."

It should be noted that the Broadway productions of Dear Evan Hansen and Significant Other were not eligible as they had been considered during their previous off-Broadway engagements, whilst Indecent, Sweat, and Oslo were considered for their off-Broadway runs this season and not their subsequent Broadway transfers.

Furthermore, the new Broadway production of Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 was considered in terms of design, staging, and any new members of the cast since its previous off-Broadway engagements.

Glenn Close's performance and costumes were ineligible due to the previous Broadway production of Sunset Boulevard, but all other aspects of the revival production were considered.

Sunday in the Park with George, as per the request of the show's producers, was not considered this awards season.

Drama Desk was founded in 1949 to explore key issues in the theater and to bring together critics and writers in an organization to support the ongoing development of theater in New York. The organization began presenting its awards in 1955, and it is the only critics' organization to honor achievement in the theater with competition among Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions in the same categories.
