Summary
- Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) will make his U.S. stage debut in Grass at the Park Avenue Armory in February 2027
- The play is by Tony and Pulitzer winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins
- The Armory has named four additional multimedia productions in its 2027 season
Park Avenue Armory has named its 2027 season featuring five productions spanning theatre, opera, art, music, and more.
From February 19 to March 28 is the previously announced world premiere of Tony and Pulitzer winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins's Grass, newly announced to star Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe winner Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Misty Green, Judas and the Black Messiah) in his U.S. stage debut. He plays a son on a fantastical Southern road trip with his mom in the play directed by Sarah Benson.
From June 9 to August 8 is Peace Camp: A Vigil, an interactive art installation in which visitors travel through an encampment of glowing tents amid a soundscape of love poetry, words, signals, and natural sounds. The installation is by Deborah Warner and features compositions and sound design by Mel Mercier.
From September 14-29 is Einstein on the Beach, the first new production of Philip Glass's opera since its 1976 premiere. Director Phelim McDermott's North American-premiere staging, inspired by Einstein’s scientific ideas and staged in honor of Glass's 90th birthday, blends "vocalists, instrumentalists, actors, and movement artists with light, sculpture, technology, and the gravitational pull of quantum physics." Brad Lubman conducts.
From October 14-19 is Audience Plant 2027, a site-specific multimedia concert installation featuring original songs and soundscapes, improvised jam sections, a towering performance sculpture, and new Armory-commissioned works of film.
The project is conceived by Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin with Ashland Mines and Jason Moran; composed by Trecartin, arranged by Michael Beharie, music directed by Aaron David Ross, and curated by Eliza Ryan, with articulations by Ashland Mines.
The Armory's final 2027 production, from December 7-18, is Guernica Guernica by theater collective FC Bergman. Through three different perspectives, the production examines the bombing of Guernica in the Spanish Civil War, the Picasso painting it inspired, and what it means that the painting has become more famous to some than the tragedy itself.
All five listed productions will take place in the Armory's Wade Thompson Drill Hall.
