The complete cast has been revealed for the off-Broadway premiere of [*Rolling Thunder*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/44292-rolling-thunder), which is described as "part rock concert, part documentary." Performances begin at New World Stages on July 10. 

The cast includes Drew Becker (Johnny), Cassadee Pope (Linda), Justin Matthew Sargent (Thomas), Daniel Yearwood (Andy), Courtnee Carter (Lauren & others), and Deon’te Goodman (Mike & others). Understudies for this production are Ethan Hardy Benson and Erin Ramirez.

The show, first developed in Australia, tells the stories of young soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War and the protest movement that sought to end it. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, with the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975.

*Rolling Thunder* celebrates songs of the ‘60s and ‘70s, encompassing the musical influence and legacy of songwriters including Paul Simon, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Roberta Flack, Mick Jagger and Keith Richard, among others. 

The creative team for *Rolling Thunder* includes Wilson Chin (set design), Andrea Lauer (costume design), Jake DeGroot (lighting design), Mike Tracey (sound design), Caite Hevner (video design), Chong Lim AM and Sonny Paladino (arrangements and orchestrations), and Sonny Paladino (US music supervision and music direction).

A new musical that's part documentary, part jukebox, and part concert, *Rolling Thunder* brings together legendary songs of the period of the 1960s and ‘70s to telegraph a raw and potent story inspired by Vietnam veterans and their families. That era of United States history was full of sweeping changes: the draft, combat, Civil Rights, and homecoming are all evocatively explored in this intimate yet epic new work. 

The conflict, the world’s first televised war, gave rise to some of the most blistering and lyrical songs of the twentieth century, which  are all heard in this new musical: some of the hits from that time coming to New World Stages include “The Letter," “Black Magic Woman," “Gimme Shelter," “Help Me Make it Through the Nightt," and “Eve of Destruction."

At its center, *Rolling Thunder* is a deeply moving portrait: a distinctly American love story of courage, longing, loss, and hope.

## What to watch for
- Journalist Bryce Hallett wrote this story, and Kenneth Ferrone, an Emmy nominee who poduced the live TV musicals of *Rent, Grease,* and *Annie*, directs.
- 60s and 70s songs heard in the musical include "Killing Me Softly with His Song,”“We’ve Gotta Get Out of This Place,” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water."
- The show was first staged in Australia in 2014 and revived in 2023.
- “Rolling Thunder has been a labor of love for many years and salutes Vietnam and contemporary veterans," said producer Rebecca Blake in a statement.

The Vietnam War was a momentous period in United States history, reintroducing the draft and reigniting the importance of student protests. All the while, the Civil Rights Movement was gaining steam and participation in politics, thanks to this being the first televised war, was evolving.

*Rolling Thunder* features a book by journalist and writer Bryce Hallett and direction by Emmy nominee Kenneth Ferrone. The premiere of *Rolling Thunder* off Broadway coincides with the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.

New World Stages is a renowned theatre venue located in the bustling heart of New York City. This five-theatre complex is designed to accommodate a wide variety of performances, from avant-garde productions to blockbuster musicals. Each theatre in the complex is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and an intimate, comfortable seating layout, providing theatre patrons with a unique and immersive experience. The interior design of New World Stages presents a fusion of art and architecture, featuring a lobby filled with rising and falling stage curtains and top-notch facilities. Located beneath the Worldwide Plaza between Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen, New World Stages is a modern performing arts complex with five theatres for Off-Broadway productions.

The building was constructed in 1994 on the site of the third Madison Square Garden. It first opened as a Loews Cineplex Entertainment multiplex cinema, which closed in 2001.

For the next three years, the building underwent substantial renovations and finally reopened as Dodger Stages in 2004, designed by architects Beyer, Blinder, and Belle. The theatre complex was renamed New World Stages on March 16, 2006, and Stage Entertainment assumed sole ownership of the property. The Shubert Organization took over ownership and operation on November 17, 2017.

All five spaces have between 100 and 500 seats, officially deeming New World Stages an Off-Broadway venue. Stage 1 and Stage 3 are the largest theatres in the complex with 499 seats. Stages 2 and 4 offer a 350-seat capacity. Stage 5 is the smallest venue with 199 seats. The Green Room is the official bar and lounge for New World Stages, but it can also be a performance space.

## How to get to New World Stages off Broadway

New World Stages is closest to the 50th St. subway stop on the C and E lines. The nearest bus stop is 9 Av./W 50 St. on the M11 line.

## Where is *The Play That Goes Wrong* playing?

*The Play That Goes Wrong* is at New World Stages' Stage 4. The comedy play made its Broadway debut in 2017, and after running there for two years, it transferred off Broadway.

Previous productions that enjoyed long Off-Broadway runs at New World Stages after closing on Broadway are *Jersey Boys* and *Avenue Q*.
