About Rolling Thunder

See this powerful new musical about the Vietnam War. Part jukebox, part historical documentary, and part concert, Rolling Thunder the musical is a love letter to the young American soldiers who were drafted to serve overseas in the Vietnam War, and to the protestors on the home front who said no to the war. After a stunning production, and then a revival, in Australia, this heartfelt musical now comes to New World Stages.

Experience Rolling Thunder off Broadway starting this summer. Infusing music that defined the era around the war, the 1960s and 70s, songs in this musical are from legendary artists including Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix (“A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” “All Along the Watchtower”), the Rolling Stones (“Gimme Shelter”), Simon and Garfunkel (“Bridge Over Troubled Water”), the Impressions (“People Get Ready”), Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill (“We Gotta Get Out of This Place”), and others.

Rolling Thunder has been a labor of love for many years and salutes Vietnam and contemporary veterans," said producer Rebecca Blake in a statement. "It is bursting with energy and passion and has the invigorating atmosphere and feel of a rock concert. It also has tremendous energy and heart.”

The Vietnam War was a momentous period in United States history, reintroducing the draft and reigniting the importance of student protests. All the while, the Civil Rights Movement was gaining steam and participation in politics, thanks to this being the first televised war, was evolving.

Rolling Thunder features a book by journalist and writer Bryce Hallett and direction by Emmy nominee Kenneth Ferrone. The premiere of Rolling Thunder off Broadway coincides with the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.
