Company, starring Katrina Lenk & Patti LuPone, begins performances on Broadway
The acclaimed, gender-swapped revival of Company is set for an official opening at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on March 22, 2020.
Phone rings, door chimes, in comes Company! Director Marianne Elliott's Olivier Award-winning revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's beloved musical begins performances at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre tonight. An official opening is set for Sondheim's 90th Birthday on March 22, 2020.
Synopsis: "The quintessential musical comedy about the search for love and cocktails in the Big Apple is turned on its head in Elliott's revelatory staging, in which musical theatre's most iconic bachelor becomes a bachelorette. At Bobbie's 35th birthday party, all her friends are wondering why isn't she married? Why can't she find the right man? And, why can't she settle down and have a family? This whip smart musical, given a game-changing makeover for a modern-day Manhattan, features some of Sondheim's best loved songs, including "Company," "You Could Drive a Person Crazy," "The Ladies Who Lunch," "Side by Side," and the iconic "Being Alive.""
Marianne Elliott, whose directorial credits include The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, War Horse and the recent Broadway production of Angels in America, collaborated closely with Sondheim himself during the production's London run to reimagine the lead character and certain other characters as the opposite gender.
As previously reported, the cast of Company includes Tony Award winner Katrina Lenk (as Bobbie), two-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone (as Joanne), Terence Archie (as Larry), Grammy Award winner Etai Benson (as Paul), Nikki Renée Daniels (as Jenny), Matt Doyle (as Jamie), Claybourne Elder (as Andy), three-time Tony Award nominee Christopher Fitzgerald (as David), Greg Hildreth (as Peter), Kyle Dean Massey (as Theo), Rashidra Scott (as Susan), two-time Tony Award nominee Christopher Sieber (as Harry), Tony Award nominee Jennifer Simard (as Sarah), and Bobby Conte Thornton (as P.J.).
Ms. LuPone, who starred in the London production, is reprising her Olivier Award-winning performance as Joanne for the Broadway run.
In a five-star review on our London Theatre Guide sister site, Mark Shenton wrote: "There have been other wonderful productions of Company, [...] but this version is both a departure into new territory and a stunning reaffirmation of its brilliance."
