Chicago: Jeff McCarthy & Terra C. MacLeod to play 'Billy Flynn' & 'Velma Kelly,' resepectively


On 6 Oct, the Broadway company of Chicago welcomes back Jeff McCarthy to the role of slick criminal lawyer 'Billy Flynn,' for a one-week return engagement through to 12 Oct 2008.

McCarthy made his Chicago debut as Billy Flynn in Dec 2007 and returned for a second extended engagement last March. His prior Broadway roles include Chieftain Dubhdara in 'The Pirate Queen,' Officer Lockstock in 'Urinetown,' 'Terry Turner' in 'Side Show' and the 'Beast' in 'Beauty and the Beast,' among others.

McCarthy rejoins the Chicago company this month to sub for the vacationing Tom Wopat, who will return as 'Billy Flynn' on 13 Oct 2008.

And later this month, Chicago will welcome back Terra C. MacLeod as merry murderess 'Velma Kelly' for another one-week return engagement, from 27 Oct - 2 Nov 2008, while Brenda Braxton is on vacation.

MacLeod has a long history with 'Velma Kelly,' having starred in the French world premieres of Chicago in Montreal (2003) and Paris (2004), in addition to subsequent engagements with the Broadway production and the national and international touring companies.

MacLeod's other recent stage credits include 'Gladys' in 'The Pajama Game' at Musical Theatre West (Los Angeles) and 'Adelaide' in 'Guys and Dolls' at the San Diego Musical Theatre. She is the recipient of the Jessie Richardson Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of 'Anita' in the Vancouver Arts Club production of 'West Side Story.'

Following her one-week return engagement on Broadway, MacLeod will go on to headline the upcoming 10th National Tour of Chicago, which launches on 11 Nov 2008 at the Belk Theatre in Charlotte, NC.

Chicago has been playing on Broadway since 14 Nov 1996, it moved to the Ambassador Theatre on the 29 Jan 2003 where it is currently booking through to 4 Jan 2009.

Chicago follows not your usual housewife, Roxie Hart, who gains dubious notoriety when she kills her boyfriend, invents her defence and manipulates everyone from her trustworthy husband to the fickle media and the unsuspecting public. The show features the well known songs, 'All That Jazz,' 'Razzle Dazzle' and 'Mr. Cellophane'.

Chicago currently stars Brenda Braxton (Velma Kelly), Bianca Marroquin (Roxie Hart), Tom Wopat (Billy Flynn), Carol Woods (Matron 'Mama' Morton), Kevin Chamberlin (Amos Hart) and R. Lowe (Mary Sunshine)

Chicago has music by John Kander, Lyrics by Fred Ebb, Book by Bob Fosse & Fred Ebb.

The musical is directed by Walter Bobbie, with choreography by Ann Reinking, scene design by John Lee Beatty, costumes by William Ivey Long, lighting by Ken Billington and sound by Scott Lehrer.

Chicago is the winner of six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording. It is the eighth longest-running production in Broadway history, as well as Broadway�s longest-running musical revival.
