Performances as part of NYPopsUp Festival will continue through to Labor Day, Sept. 6, 2021.With Coronavirus restrictions beginning to be lifted across New York, Governor Cuomo has announced a pop up festival across the state. NY PopsUp will serve as a pilot program to stabilize the eventual return of live performances, with festival performances beginning February 20 and continuing through to Labor Day.News of upcoming live performances is announced at the same time <a href="/news-features/could-broadway-theaters-finally-get-the-green-light-to-reopen">as a framework for Broadway theaters to reopen</a>, allowing for the industry to get back on its feet.Ahead of the festival, Governor Cuomo said: "Creative synergies are vital for cities to survive, and our arts and cultural industries have been shut down all across the country, taking a terrible toll on workers and the economy. We want to be aggressive with reopening the State and getting our economy back on track, and NY PopsUp will be an important bridge to the broader reopening of our world-class performance venues and institutions. New York has been a leader throughout this entire pandemic, and we will lead once again with bringing back the arts."Throughout the seven-month festival, free events will be staged in all five boroughs of New York City, as well as upstate and Western New York. Performances will take place in every possible location: parks, museums, fire escapes and parking lots, in the hopes of bringing live entertainment to the masses.The council of artistic advisors working on NYPopsUp includes Jeremy O' Harris, the Tony Award-nominated playwright whose works include <a href="/show/slave-play">Slave Play</a>. Kyle Abraham, Jon Batiste, Ayodele Casel, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Mimi Lien, Wynton Marsalis, Claudia Rankine, Cécile McLorin Salvan, Chris Thile, Julio Torres and Whitney White also sit on the board.The first performances as part of NYPopsUp will take place from February 20. Events confirmed so far include tributes to healthcare workers, a partnership show with the Guggenheim, a new live radio show hosted by Chris Thile and performances in storefront windows.Artists taking part throughout NYPopsUp include <a href="/actor-profile/hugh-jackman">Hugh Jackman</a> and <a href="/actor-profile/sutton-foster">Sutton Foster</a>, who will star in the Broadway revival of <a href="/show/the-music-man">The Music Man</a> at the <a href="/theatres/winter-garden-theatre">Winter Garden Theatre</a>. Husband and wife duo <a href="/actor-profile/sarah-jessica-parker">Sarah Jessica Parker</a> and <a href="/actor-profile/matthew-broderick">Matthew Broderick</a> are also confirmed, ahead of reprising their performances in the Broadway revival of <a href="/show/plaza-suite">Plaza Suite </a>at the <a href="/theatres/hudson-theatre">Hudson Theatre</a>. Over 1000 events are scheduled to take place throughout New York state.

The contemporary circus and variety show <a href="/show/slavas-snowshow">Slava's Snowshow</a> will be available to stream this month. The production will be available on BroadwayHD from February 8, marking the first time Slava's Snowshow can be watched online.Celebrating the magical powers of snow and ice, <a href="/show/slavas-snowshow">Slava's Snowshow</a> includes a series of wintry vignettes. Clowns bounce all over the stage using interpretative props and popular music, ending with a spellbinding snowstorm of a finale.<a href="/show/slavas-snowshow">Slava's Snowshow</a> was first staged in Moscow in 1993, later making its London premiere in 1997. Its Broadway premiere came in 2008 at the <a href="/theatres/hayes-theater">Hayes Theater</a>, and was revived last year at the <a href="/theatres/stephen-sondheim-theatre">Stephen Sondheim Theatre</a>&nbsp;for its second Broadway season.In a <a href="/reviews/review-of-slavas-snowshow-on-broadway">five star review for New York Theatre Guide</a>, Holli Harms said the show "will remind you about the beauty of our world. About simple acts of love and kindness. It is the epitome of empathy, vulnerability, and childlike wonderment. According to film shoot signs outside the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre,&nbsp;Come From Away&nbsp;is being filmed on Broadway from 27 Apr - 2 May 2021.&nbsp;Produced by Entertainment One, the upcoming <a href="/show/come-from-away">Come From Away</a> film will mark the first time audiences can watch the full production away from the stage. The filmed version will be recorded at the <a href="/theatres/gerald-schoenfeld-theatre">Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre</a> this May to be released in September, marking the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the Twin Towers.Set in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, <a href="/show/come-from-away">Come From Away</a> tells of 7,000 stranded air crew and passengers who were forced to divert to Newfoundland as part of Operation Yellow Ribbon. In doing so, the locals and travelers formed an international community, changing their lives forever.<a href="/show/come-from-away">Come From Away</a> is written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, after visiting Gander on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. After regional try-outs, Come From Away began performances at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on February 18, 2017 ahead of an opening night on March 12, 2017. In a <a href="/reviews/come-from-away">review for New York Theatre Guide</a>, Tulis McCall said: "No one will leave untouched by this show. The spirit that is on that stage sweeps past the footlights and scoops everyone in the audience up into its arms."Although casting for the filmed version is to be announced, members of the Broadway cast are expected to reprise their roles. The original Broadway cast included Chad Kimball, Jenn Collella, Joel Hatch, Rodney Hicks, Caesar Samayoa, Kendra Kassebaum, Petrina Bromley, Geno Carr, Lee MacDougall, Q. Smith, Sharon Wheatley and Astrid Van Wieren.&nbsp;The film will also feature musical staging by two time Tony Award-nominee&nbsp;Kelly Devine, along with&nbsp;music supervision by&nbsp;Ian Eisendrath.As well as this filmed version, a feature film adaptation of <a href="/show/come-from-away">Come From Away</a> is currently in early planning stages. The nominees for the 78th Golden Globe Awards have been announced on February 3, with a list of Broadway stars recognised. Musicals and plays first seen on Broadway are honored in the full list of nominations, ahead of the ceremony on February 28.&nbsp;Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman have been nominated for their performances in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. The August Wilson play was adapted for screen, released on <a href="/news-features/our-top-20-netflix-picks-for-broadway-fans">Netflix </a>in December 2020. Disney on Broadway announces Women’s Day celebrations

The celebrations mark Disney's fourth year of Women's Day on Broadway.

After a 2019 engagement at <a href="/theatres/studio-54">Studio 54</a>, <a href="/show/the-sound-inside">The Sound Inside</a> will be adapted into an audio play, it has been announced. <a href="/actor-profile/mary-louise-parker">Mary-Louise Parker</a>&nbsp;and Will Hochman will reprise their performances once more, available to download from March 18.Adam Rapp's play follows Bella, a tenured professor and a student named Christopher. Immediately, they become close with one another when it's discovered Christopher is somewhat of a young prodigy. Drawn to one another, they write each other's stories, but when Bella asks Christopher to do the unthinkable, Christopher must decide whether to change his life.<a href="/show/the-sound-inside">The Sound Inside</a> began previews at <a href="/theatres/studio-54">Studio 54</a> on Sept. 14, 2019, ahead of an opening night on October 17. The production ran for four months, closing on Jan. 12, 2020. The film will be released in cinemas on Sept. 24, 2021, available to stream via home entertainment services 17 days after — Oct. 11, 2021.According to <a href="https://variety.com/2021/film/news/dear-evan-hansen-movie-release-date-1234896009/" target="_blank">Variety</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/show/dear-evan-hansen">Dear Evan Hansen</a> is likely to keep its fall 2021 release date due to an early premium video-on-demand agreement. In securing this, Universal Studios can now debut movies on home entertainment systems after 17 days, without fear that movie theaters will boycott the film's release.Based on Steven Levenson's book, <a href="/show/dear-evan-hansen">Dear Evan Hansen</a> follows Evan Hansen, a high schooler who gets wrapped up in his own lies after kickstarting a movement to remember his classmate Connor Murphy. According to <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/01/broadway-tony-awards-broadcast-schedule-coincide-reopening-voting-march-1234683307/" target="_blank">Deadline</a>, voting will take place for the 74th annual Tony Awards from March 1 - 15.Typically, the Tony Awards take place in June of each year, marking the end of each theatre year in the calendar. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, this year's awards were postponed, and a ceremony date has not been confirmed. However, the Tony Awards ceremony will be scheduled in return with the reopening of Broadway, so it's possible a fall 2021 date is on the cards.The Tony Award voting will take place on the <a href="/news-features/the-broadway-league-confirms-month-long-broadway-shutdown-due-to-covid-19">first anniversary of the shutdown of all Broadway theaters</a>, which took place on March 12. This means that fewer productions were eligible to be nominated; 18 productions were up for awards.<a href="/show/jagged-little-pill">Jagged Little Pill</a>&nbsp;received 15 nominations, while&nbsp;<a href="/show/moulin-rouge-the-musical">Moulin Rouge! There's still no news about when the 2020 Tony Awards will take place.

With the vaccine rollout in full swing across the country, could Broadway theaters be the next step in the quest for normality? As reported by <a href="https://broadwaynews.com/2021/01/26/broadway-league-offers-theaters-as-vaccination-sites/" target="_blank">Broadway News</a>, The Broadway League is the latest in a list of live events organizations to give up their venues for vaccination efforts.In a letter to President Joe Biden, the Broadway League said: "While we have been effectively shuttered by the pandemic, we have vast resources that, if fully utilized, could provide invaluable mechanisms in our country's vaccine distribution. In fact because we are shuttered, we are able to offer the full weight of our industry to support vaccine distribution beginning immediately."So far, Yankee Stadium and Citi Field have been designated as vaccination centers for New York residents. Plans are currently on hold until New York state receives a greater amount of vaccines, so that all sites can be used to their full potential.News of theaters being used as vaccination centers marks a potential light at the end of the tunnel, with Broadway theaters having been shut since mid-March 2020.Currently, <a href="/news-features/will-broadway-shows-reopen-in-2021">Broadway shows are suspended</a> until May 31, 2021 at the earliest. The Broadway League have offered their venues to help in the fight against Coronavirus.

The <a href="/show/hamilton">Hamilton </a>film was originally slated for an October 2021 release, but was bumped up by over a year and released on Disney+. As well as being entered for Golden Globe musical categories, Hamilton has been honored by the American Film Institute. Hamilton is one of many theatre film adaptations recognized by the AFI, with this year's awards taking place on February 26.Starring the original Broadway cast, the filmed performance of Hamilton was seen by over 2.5 million people on Disney+ during its opening fortnight. The cast stars Lin-Manuel Miranda as the title founding father, alongside Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldberry, Christopher Jackson, Daveed Diggs and Jonathan Groff and <a href="/news-features/our-top-20-disney-picks-for-broadway-fans">can be watched on Disney+</a>.The American Film Institute's movies of the year include Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, released on <a href="/news-features/our-top-20-netflix-picks-for-broadway-fans">Netflix </a>in December 2020. He's going, too. Original [*Hadestown*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/14748-hadestown-tickets) Broadway cast member Reeve Carney will depart the show, playing his final performance at the [Walter Kerr Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/walter-kerr-theatre) on November 19.

Carney has played the lead role of Orpheus on Broadway since its 2019 premiere. He first originated the character in two pre-Broadway premieres: the 2017 Canadian production in Edmonton, Alberta, and in London's West End in 2018.

“My gratitude goes out to Anäis Mitchell and all who have touched this show with their divine intention,” said Carney. “To my fellow cast mates, who have been with me in the trenches, giving of themselves freely and unceasingly, on and off the stage. Thank you... And to our incredible audiences here at the Walter Kerr Theatre... It has been an honor bringing this story to life for you all night after night over these many years.”

Carney's departure comes shortly after fellow original cast member Eva Noblezada, who earned a Tony Award nomination for starring as Eurydice, played her final performance in August.

Replacement casting for Orpheus has yet to be announced. The current *Hadestown* cast includes Lillias White as Hermes, Solea Pfeiffer as Eurydice, Betty Who as Persephone, Phillip Boykin as Hades, and Amelia Cormack, Lindsey Hailes, and Brit West as the Fates.

Written by Anäis Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin, *Hadestown* reimagines the ancient Greek myth of lovers Orpheus and Eurydice. When the poor Eurydice descends into Hades's underworld sweatshop, Orpheus takes a dangerous journey to rescue her. The show won eight 2019 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

“Reeve helped define both stories at the center of this show — the cosmic love story of a young man who changes the laws of the space time continuum to save his lover, and the political story of a ‘poor boy’ who gets angry enough to question ‘the king,’” said Chavkin. “His extraordinary musicianship as guitarist and singer was an endless source of inspiration to both Anaïs and I in the creation of the show, and his elegant leadership as an actor and company member, both onstage and off, will be deeply missed.”

The six-time Tony Award-winning Best Play, now in its fifth year at the Lyric Theatre, continues the story of Harry Potter and the next generation of wizards.

The heat is going away. [*Some Like It Hot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24262-some-like-it-hot-tickets) has set a Broadway closing date of December 30 at the [Shubert Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/shubert-theatre).

The musical will have played for just over a year, having played 483 total performances since November 1, 2022.

*Some Like It Hot* is a musical adapted from the 1959 Billy Wilder comedy of the same name, in which two Prohibition-era jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, flee the Chicago mob. While stowing away in disguise with an all-female swing band, they find love and learn more about their truest identities.

Matthew López and Amber Ruffin wrote the book, and songs are by Marc Shaiman (music and lyrics) and Scott Wittman (lyrics). Casey Nicholaw directs and choreographs.

A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical on Broadway

The actor originated the role of a young Neil Diamond in this musical at the Broadhurst Theatre about the Grammy Award-winning musician's life and career.

Sometimes the dividing line between a character and a playwright is a blurry one. So it is with Ossie Davis’s 1961 satirical comedy [*Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27642-purlie-victorious-tickets), now back on Broadway for the first time since its debut 62 years ago.

The story follows Purlie Victorious Judson, a Black self-made traveling preacher who returns to his segregated Georgia hometown with a mission to buy and rehab its derelict church, Big Bethel. As a Black man, that’s a tall order. The church, like the town, is in the grip of racist tyrant Ol’ Cap’n Cotchipee.

Davis grew up in racially segregated Georgia. Like Purlie, Davis had first-hand experience with discrimination and bigotry, forces that inform the play and fueled his lifelong commitment to civil rights. In a pre-show voiceover, director Kenny Leon notes that the play began as an angry drama. But it evolved to become less autobiographical and funnier. Get people laughing, you get people’s attention. That’s powerful.

## The politics of *Purlie Victorious*

Davis situated his play in Georgia in the late 1950s, a time when Jim Crow – which has been called “a racial caste system” – were in effect in the American South. Bottom line: Blacks were second-class citizens.

“Jim Crow was more than a series of rigid anti-black laws. It was a way of life,” according to the [Jim Crow Museum](https://jimcrowmuseum.ferris.edu/), a resource to tell the story of African American resiliency. Jim Crow bolstered the lie that Blacks were inferior to whites. 

Davis shrewdly creates Ol' Cap'n Cotchipee to be the flesh-and-blood manifestation of Jim Crow, a man dressed head to toe in white who won’t hesitate to say he reveres “all that is white and holy” – and that doesn’t include African Americans. He sums the philosophy up in a chilling line: "My ol' Confederate father told me on his deathbed: Feed the Negras first - after the horses and cattle."

Cotchipee is quick to reach for his bullwhip, but he takes a shine to Purlie’s brother Gitlow (that name is no accident), an “Uncle Tom” who’s content being subservient and keeping to the old-plantation-day ways. 

But Davis leaves room for hope. Cotchipee’s liberal-minded son Charlie has had it with his father’s bigoted ways – and that ultimately leads the way for Purlie to get the last laugh.

## The real-life partnership of *Purlie Victorious*

Purlie’s plan to take ownership of Big Bethel requires a secret weapon – Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins, a follower and love interest of Purlie's who’s game for anything. Ossie Davis played the title role in the comedy’s Broadway premiere, so naturally, his wife, Ruby Dee, played Lutiebelle. 

The couple, who were married for 57 years, previously shared a Broadway stage in 1946 in *Jeb* and 1959 in *A Raisin in the Sun*. *Purlie Victorious* gave them a chance to chomp into two juicy roles together onstage. And their involvement in the show didn't end with the original production: Dee later played the supporting role of Idella in a 2002 reading.

They frequently worked together throughout their careers until he died in 2005 at 87; she died in 2014 at 91. But *Purlie Victorious* gave them a unique chance to shine a bright spotlight on the struggle for equality.

## Famous *Purlie Victorious* reviews

Suffice it to say that the social influencers of 1961 took notice of what Purlie Victorious was preaching. Fellow reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. saw the show. So did Malcolm X. According to Davis, [X said](http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ccbh/mxp/davis.html), “Black folks laughing at White folks was revolutionary — the highest kind of struggle he could imagine.” 

Eleanor Roosevelt also attended. She laughed, and then she [wrote about the experience](https://www2.gwu.edu/~erpapers/myday/displaydoc.cfm?_y=1962&_f=md005050). “Mixed with the humor there is intelligent, incisive commentary on segregation, discrimination, and the slow pace of integration,” she wrote.

“I think it is well for you as an American citizen to see it,” she added, “and ponder our racial problem… as a question affecting our standing and our real sincerity among the peoples of the world.”

Call that a *Purlie* of wisdom.

### *Hell’s Kitchen*

Grammy winner [Alicia Keys](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/hear-the-music-of-alicia-keys-in-the-hells-kitchen-musical) makes her Off-Broadway debut at The [Public Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/public-theater) in her semi-autobiographical coming-of-age musical set in her home neighborhood in Manhattan. A Sondheim premiere? We’re there. Michael John LaChiusa seizes inspiration for his tango-infused musical at Lincoln Center from the early life of choreographer and director Graciela Danielle, one of his frequent collaborators. ### *Merry Me*

There’s something about *Merry* – and then some. Antihero, anyone? *Tootsie* Tony winner Santino Fontana stars as Harry Bogen, an eager-beaver shipping clerk in 1937 New York City whose ambition is rivaled only by his unscrupulousness. This [Classic Stage Company](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/classic-stage-company) production marks the first revival of the 1962 musical in 30 years and is a bit of a family affair. Revisions to Jerome Weidman’s original book, based on his novel, are by his son, John Weidman. Songs are by Harold Rome.

## Behind the Emerald Curtain

If you’ve ever wondered how Elphaba goes green every night or flies through the air, you’ll want to go on the Behind the Emerald Curtain tour. Cast members lead this 90-minute special behind-the-scenes tour through the *Wicked* museum, which includes special costumes, set pieces, props, scale models and more.

## Enchantments

Are you more intrigued by the witchy side of *Wicked*? Pay a visit to Enchantments, the oldest occult store in New York City. Located in the East Village, this store has tons of goodies for anyone trying to get into the magical spirit, with tarot cards, incense, cauldrons, and customized candles tailored toward whatever you hope to manifest. You can also get yourself a talisman to wear to the show and make sure any energy coming toward you is anything but wicked!

## The Statue of Liberty

Spend the day with another famous woman who is green from head to toe: the Statue of Liberty. A trip to this beloved monument (which is actually made of copper!) starts with a ferry ride to Liberty Island. Once there, you can visit the museum to learn more about Lady Liberty or climb up to her crown for an amazing view of the city’s skyline (but you’ll have to book tickets in advance). ## Trapeze class

One of the most jaw-dropping moments in *Wicked* is when Elphaba takes flight. If you want to get a taste of what it feels like to soar through the air, you can take a flying trapeze class. The Trapeze School of New York at Hudson River Park, for example, teaches you how to hang by your knees, fly through the air, and do a “catch” (when someone on another trapeze bar catches you) all in your first class.

You can also try other gravity-defying activities, like trampoline classes and aerial hoop classes (also known as Lyra). It’s certainly a thrilling way to prepare for *Wicked*!

## *Wicked*

No *Wicked* day would be complete without seeing the iconic musical itself. Learn the history of Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, long before Dorothy arrives in Oz. Despite being roommates at Shiz University, they're bitter enemies and polar opposites until they ultimately settle their differences and become fierce friends.

Their union is tested, however, when Elphaba falls from the Wizard's good graces, while Glinda is torn between supporting her or tarnishing her image among the people of Oz. *Wicked* a story of the power of female friendship, standing up for what’s right, and finding strength in what makes you different.

From exploring Gershwin Theatre history to defying gravity just like Elphaba does, these activities are a great way to spend one short day *Wicked*-style.

They're hitting the dance floor! The new Broadway musical [*How to Dance in Ohio*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/32763-how-to-dance-in-ohio-tickets) has set its complete Broadway cast ahead of its first performance on November 15. Opening night is December 10.

*How to Dance in Ohio* is a musical adaptation of the same-named documentary by Alexandra Shiva. The show follows a group of autistic young adults who come of age and experience newfound love, stress, confidence, and change as they prepare for a formal dance at their group counseling center.

The show comes to Broadway's [Belasco Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/belasco-theatre) after a 2022 world premiere in Syracuse, with multiple cast members returning.

## Who is in the *How to Dance in Ohio* Broadway cast?

Newly announced *How to Dance in Ohio* cast members include Caesar Samayoa as psychologist Dr. Emilio Amigo, Cristina Sastre as Ashley Amigo, and ensemble members Jean Christian Barry, Collin Hancock, Hunter Hollingsworth, Marina Jansen, Ayanna Thomas, and Marina Pires.

They join seven [previously announced cast members](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/new-musical-how-to-dance-in-ohio-to-premiere-on-broadway-this-fall) making their Broadway debuts: Desmond Luis Edwards as Remy, Amelia Fei (Yi-Hsuan Fei) as Caroline, Madison Kopec as Marideth, Liam Pearce as Drew, Imani Russell as Mel, Conor Tague as Tommy, and Ashley Wool as Jessica. All are autistic actors reprising their roles from Syracuse as the autistic adults in the show.

Other previously announced cast members include Haven Burton as Terry, Darlesia Cearcy as Johanna, Carlos L Encinias, Nick Gaswirth, Melina Kalomas, and Martín Solá.

How to Dance in Ohio on Broadway

The new musical, based on Alexandra Shiva's Peabody Award-winning documentary about autistic adults, begins performances at the Belasco Theatre in November.

Their name is Lancelot! Taran Killam and Alex Brightman join the cast of the upcoming [*Spamalot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/33129-spamalot-tickets) Broadway revival, playing at the [St. James Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/st-james-theatre) from October 31. Opening night is November 16.

Killam returns to Broadway after playing King George III in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets) in 2017. He is better known, however, for his onscreen comedy performances on *madTV* and *Saturday Night Live*, in addition to multiple sitcoms. He will play Lancelot through January 7 only.

Brightman will step into the role from January 9. He is currently starring as Richard Dreyfuss in [*The Shark Is Broken*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/28737-the-shark-is-broken-tickets) on Broadway, and he is also known for leading the Broadway musical adaptations of *Beetlejuice* and *School of Rock*. Brightman also played Lancelot at the Kennedy Center, where this *Spamalot* revival production premiered earlier this year under director/choreographer Josh Rhodes.

As [previously announced](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/spamalot-sets-broadway-cast-and-creative-team), multiple other cast members from that production will also return for the Broadway transfer: Christopher Fitzgerald as Patsy, James Monroe Iglehart as King Arthur, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer as The Lady of the Lake, Jimmy Smagula as Sir Bedevere, Michael Urie as Sir Robin, and Nik Walker as Sir Galahad. Ethan Slater also stars as The Historian/Prince Herbert.

*Spamalot* is the seven-time Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of *Monty Python and the Holy Grail*, written by John Du Prez and founding Monty Python member Eric Idle. The show is an irreverent sendup of Arthurian legends.

The actors join a cast that also includes Broadway favorites James Monroe Iglehart, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer, Ethan Slater, and more at the St. James Theatre.

Ease on down to Broadway! A revival of [*The Wiz*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27115-the-wiz-tickets) will begin performances this spring at the [Marquis Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/marquis-theatre). The first performance is March 29, and opening night is April 17.

The announcement of the New York production comes as *The Wiz* opened its pre-Broadway national tour in Baltimore, Maryland — where the Tony Award-winning original 1975 production premiered — last night.

*The Wiz* is an all-Black retelling of *The Wizard of Oz*, infusing it with jazz, pop, ballet, and Black cultural influences. The show features a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls and others, including Luther Vandross. The 2023 revival features additional material by Amber Ruffin, also represented on Broadway with *Some Like It Hot*.

Schele Williams directs the 2023 production, which features choreography by JaQuel Knight, scenic design by Hannah Beachler; costume design by Sharen Davis; lighting design by Ryan J. O’Gara; sound design by Jon Weston; projection design by Daniel Brodie; wig design by Charles LaPointe; makeup design by Kirk Cambridge-Del Pesche; music supervision, orchestrations, and music arrangements by Joseph Joubert; vocal and music arrangements by Allen René Louis; and dance music arrangements by Adam Blackstone.
