Santino Anthony Fontana was born on March 21, 1982 in Stockton, California, and is a Tony Award-winning Broadway favorite, also known for his TV role as Greg Serrano on The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and as the voice of Prince Hans in Disney’s animated classic Frozen.

He attended the Richland High School in Richland, Washington, graduating in 2000, and went on to train as an actor at the University of Minnesota’s Guthrie Theater, graduating with a bachelor degree in 2004. He also studied Theatre Arts at Interlochen Center for the Arts.

His Guthrie Theater stage credits include roles in A Christmas Carol, Six Degrees of Separation, Death of a Salesman, As You Like It, and the title role in Hamlet. In 2003, he also appeared in Washington East Opera’s La Traviata, and Once in a Lifetime, On the Verge, and Love’s Labour’s Lost for Chautauqua Theater Company.

After moving to New York City in 2006, he landed his first notable stage role as Matt in The Fantasticks off-Broadway. He then made his Broadway debut in Roundabout Theatre Company’s 2008 revival of Sunday in the Park with George and would originate the role of Tony in the Broadway premiere of Billy Elliot: The Musical from October 2008 to July 2009. He won his first Drama Desk Award for his performance as Stanley Jerome in the short-lived fall 2009 revival of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs. Fontana continued his Broadway career with two further revivals – as Rodolpho in 2010’s A View From the Bridge by Arthur Miller and as Algernon Moncrieff in Roundabout’s 2011 production of The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde.

He returned to the off-Broadway stage in the fall of 2011 – also courtesy of Roundabout Theatre Company – to star as Joseph in Stephen Karam’s Sons of the Prophet at the Laura Pels Theatre, winning his first Lucille Lortel and Obie Awards and earning a Drama Desk nomination for his performance. In the spring of 2013, Fontana originated the role of Prince Topher in the Broadway revival of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, going on to earn his first Tony Award nomination in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical) and remaining with the production through to the end of January 2014. He made his Lincoln Center Theater debut as Moss Hart in the 2014 Broadway premiere of Act One at the Vivian Beaumont Theater and returned to musicals as a temporary replacement for Gavin Creel, covering the role of Cornelius Hackl from March to May 2018, in the Tony Award-winning revival of Hello, Dolly!

On screen, Fontana is best known for his recurring role as Greg Serrano in The CW series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, starring in 22 episodes from 2015 to 2016, and had previously shot to fame as the voice of Prince Hans in Disney’s global smash hit Frozen in 2013 (reprising the role in the 2015 short film Frozen Fever). Other notable screen credits include the role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle, David Saperstein in NBC’s Shades of Blue, and Mr. Geernt in the 2015 movie Sisters. He has also landed guest roles in Jack Ryan: Shadow RecruitMade in JerseyRoyal PainsA Gifted ManNurse Jackie, and The Good Wife.

Following the world premiere pre-Broadway try-out in Chicago in the fall of 2018, Fontana returned to Broadway to star as Michael Dorsey (and Dorothy Michaels) in Tootsie at the Marquis Theatre from March 29, 2019. He won his first Tony Award for his efforts (in the category of best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical') and continued in the role for the remainder of the Broadway run through January 5, 2020.
