Jackman and Foster, both Broadway royalty, return to the stage for the first time since 2014. Jackman last appeared on stage in Jez Butterworth's play The River at the Circle in the Square Theatre. He has won two Tony Awards, including for his Broadway-debut role in The Boy From Oz, and has hosted the Tonys ceremony four times. The Music Man musical first premiered on Broadway in 1957, running for 1,375 performances and winning the Tony Award for Best Musical. The cast album won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album and ranked on the Billboard charts for 245 weeks. The Music Man on Broadway was last revived at the Neil Simon Theatre in 2000, starring Craig Bierko and Rebecca Luker in a hit production that was nominated for nine Tony Awards. The 2022 revival got six nominations, including for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Choreography, and performance nominations for Jackman, Foster, and Jayne Houdyshell.
The Music Man remains the best-known work by Meredith Willson, who loosely based the story, setting, and characters on his own Iowa hometown.
