Manhattan Theatre Club sets four plays for 2022-23 season
One Broadway production and three Off-Broadway productions have been announced.
Manhattan Theatre Club has announced four of the productions in its upcoming 2022-23 season, kicking off this fall. The productions include a Broadway premiere, two Off-Broadway New York premieres, and one Off-Broadway world premiere.
On Broadway at MTC's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre will be the Broadway premiere of Cost of Living by Martyna Majok. The show won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize following its Off-Broadway premiere, and original stars Gregg Mozgala and Katy Sullivan return to their roles. Jo Bonney directs the production, which will begin performances in fall 2022.
Also in fall 2022 will be the world premiere of Where the Mountain Meets the Sea off Broadway at New York City Center's Stage I. The play is written by Jeff Augustin, features original folk music by The Bengsons, and is directed by Joshua Kahan Brody. The show sees a Haitian immigrant travel from Florida to California, and years later, the immigrant's son makes the same trip in reverse, allowing the two men to connect in ways they never could before.
The final fall 2022 production of MTC's season is Summer, 1976, a world-premiere show written by Tony and Pulitzer winner David Auburn and directed by Daniel Sullivan. At New York City Center's Studio at Stage II will be the story of two women — the free-spirited artist Diana and the naive housewife Alice — who strike up an unlikely friendship and help each other find independence. This show marks Sullivan and Auburn's latest work together following their Tony-winning collaboration on Proof in 2000.
May Adrales will direct Qui Nguyen's Poor Yella Rednecks in spring 2023, also at New York City Center's Stage I. The New York-premiere show tells the story of an Vietnamese family trying to settle in Arkansas and the cultural differences they encounter.
Three additional productions for MTC's season, and casting, creative team, and dates for all the above productions, have yet to be announced.
