'for colored girls...' Broadway revival sets full cast

for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf found its girls. The full cast has been named for the first Broadway revival of Ntozake Shange's choreopoem, which begins performances April 1 ahead of an April 20 opening night.

The cast includes Amara Granderson as Lady in Orange, Tendayi Kuumba as Lady in Brown, Kenita R. Miller as Lady in Red, Okwui Okpokwasili as Lady in Green, Stacey Sargeant as Lady in Blue, Alexandria Wailes as Lady in Purple, and D. Woods as Lady in Yellow.

for colored girls has also announced its creative team to join previously announced director/choreographer Camille A. Brown. She makes her Broadway directorial debut with for colored girls after choreographing the show at The Public Theater in 2019. The creative team also includes set designer Myung Hee Cho, costume designer Sarafina Bush, lighting designer Jiyoun Chang, sound designer Justin Ellington, projection designer Aaron Rhyne, and hair designer Cookie Jordan. Martha Redbone and Aaron Whitby have composed original music.

for colored girls follows the sisterhood, struggle, and resilience of seven Black women living in a world shaped by racism and sexism. The women tell their stories through a blend of dance, music, song, and poetry in this "choreopoem," a term Shange coined upon creating the piece.

for colored girls premiered off Broadway at The Public Theater in 1975 before transferring to the Booth Theatre on Broadway later that year. Now, the first Broadway revival of the show is returning to the same Broadway venue for a 20-week engagement.
