"What is a legacy? It's planting seeds in a garden you'll never get to see," Lin-Manuel Miranda san when he played the titular role in his musical Hamilton. However, Miranda is seeing his legacy cement itself right before his — and the world's — very eyes.

Although Hamilton made Miranda a household name, he's been winning awards since 2008 with his first hit musical, In the Heights. After breaking musical theatre boundaries and Tony Awards records with Hamilton, he's ventured into film work. Even if you've never been to a Broadway show, you've probably seen MoanaEncanto, or tick, tick... BOOM!, so you've seen Miranda's work.

And now, history has its eyes on Miranda more than ever. He's had a busy year in Hollywood, penning music for Encanto, acting in the film adaptation of In the Heights, and directing tick, tick... BOOM!. With Academy Award nominations on the horizon, Miranda could get at least one — and if he wins, he'll join the select crowd with an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT) to his name.

But what projects did Miranda win his awards for? We're looking back at all the awards Lin-Manuel Miranda won throughout his career, and there are many. The man is non-stop!

What did Lin-Manuel Miranda win a Tony Award for?

Lin-Manuel Miranda has not just one, but three Tony Awards under his belt! He won his first Tony in 2008, when he earned the prize for Best Original Score for his first Broadway hit, In the Heights. He was also nominated in the Best Leading Actor in a Musical category for starring in the show as Usnavi.

In 2016, he again starred in a show he wrote — this time, as Alexander Hamilton in Hamilton — and picked up another nomination in the Best Leading Actor category. (Talk about déjà vu!) Though he didn't win in that category, he took home two other Tonys for writing Hamilton: Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. And Hamilton won a total of 11 Tonys out of 16 nominations, including Best Musical!

What did Lin-Manuel Miranda win a Grammy Award for?

Miranda is also a three-time Grammy winner. In the Heights and Hamilton won the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album in 2009 and 2016, respectively. And in 2018, "How Far I'll Go" from the Disney film Moana got the Best Song Written for Visual Media prize. Since Miranda wrote the song, the trophy was his!

This year, Miranda is nominated for the Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media award for In the Heights, an award he was nominated for in 2018 with Moana. He didn't win then, but maybe 2022 is his year to pick up a fourth Grammy! Though he is going up against another movie musical.

What did Lin-Manuel Miranda win an Emmy Award for?

Lin-Manuel Miranda has won two Emmy Awards. For a guy who started out off Broadway, that's pretty good! He and Tom Kitt jointly won the 2014 Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics Emmy for writing "Bigger!," the showstopping opening number of the 2013 Tony Awards ceremony. Neil Patrick Harris led a massive ensemble in the performance that celebrated the grandeur of theatre.

Hamilton took the theatre and music awards by storm, and once the musical started streaming as a Disney+ film in 2021, it caught the eye of the screen awards committees, too. Hamilton won Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) at the 2021 Emmys, and Miranda, as a producer on the special, was named a recipient.

What did Lin-Manuel Miranda win an Oscar for?

Miranda hasn't won an Oscar just yet. He was nominated for Best Original Song for "How Far I'll Go" in 2016. However, the 2022 Oscar nominations are coming out soon, and this could just be Miranda's year! Between directing tick, tick... BOOM! and writing the music for In the Heights and Disney's Encanto, Miranda has been all over the Hollywood scene in 2021 and 2022. We know "We Don't Talk About Bruno" ... but we had to once the song went viral.

Miranda, however, got a Best Original song nomination for writing a different Encanto tune: "Dos Orugitas." He didn't snag the win, but he's got a long career ahead of him! Once Miranda does get an Oscar (and we're sure he will), he'll achieve EGOT status, with at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony to his name. He'll become only the 17th person ever to do so! Or 23rd, if you count the few actors who only have a special, non-competitive award in one or more of the categories. Either way, it's an impressive achievement that seems to be within Miranda's reach.

What other awards has Lin-Manuel Miranda won?

Both of Miranda's Broadway musicals were nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In the Heights lost out in 2009 (Lynn Nottage got her first Pulitzer for Ruined instead), but Hamilton took home the honor in 2016.

If he wins an Oscar, not only will he have EGOT status, but he'll also have PEGOT status, which includes the Pulitzer, and is only held by two people so far: Richard Rodgers and Marvin Hamlisch. There's even a lesser-used acronym, MacPEGOTO, which tacks on the MacArthur Genius Grant and Olivier Award. Miranda's got both of those already, so not only might he EGOT — he's within reach of much rarer achievements.

Speaking of Oliviers, Miranda found success across the pond with both his musicals, too. At London's Olivier Awards, In the Heights and Hamilton each won the Outstanding Achievement in Music award. And even before they had this level of global success, back when each show was just getting its start off Broadway, each musical took home an Obie Award, which recognizes excellent Off-Broadway theatre.

Miranda has won multiple other awards from various committees. For all his achievements in film, theatre, and music across the globe, Miranda earned stars on two Walks of Fame — in Hollywood and in Puerto Rico — and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2018 (putting him within reach of another EGOT variation, the KEGOT). That award is given to those with a lifetime of achievement in the arts! But as evidenced by the last few years alone, Miranda's career is far from slowing down, and so is his awards potential. To quote his Grammy-winning song, there's no telling how far he'll go.
