Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus, starring Nathan Lane, to close early on Broadway
The Broadway premiere starring Nathan Lane will play its final performance at the Booth Theatre on June 16, 2019.
It has been announced that Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus will play its final performance at the Booth Theatre on June 16, 2019. The latest play by Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer Taylor Mac, the Broadway production began previews on March 11 ahead of an official opening on April 21, and it will have played a total of 45 previews and 65 regular performances.
The production stars Nathan Lane as Gary, Kristine Nielsen as Janice and Julie White as Carol. Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus received seven 2019 Tony Award nominations ahead of the ceremony on June 9, including "Best Play," "Best Director of a Play," and "Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play" for both Ms. Nielsen and Ms. White.
Synopsis: "In Gary, Taylor Mac’s singular world view intersects with Shakespeare’s first tragedy, Titus Andronicus. In Mac’s extraordinary new play, set during the fall of the Roman Empire, the years of bloody battles are over. The civil war has ended. The country has been stolen by madmen, and there are casualties everywhere (among them a midwife on the verge of death – Nielsen). And two very lowly servants – Lane and Martin – are charged with cleaning up the bodies. The year is 400 – but it feels like the end of the world."
The creative team of Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus features scenic design by Santo Loquasto, costume design by Ann Roth and lighting design by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer, all receiving Tony Award nominations for their respective work in the production. Direction is by George C. Wolfe, original music by Danny Elfman and movement by Bill Irwin.
In a review for New York Theatre Guide, Mark Shenton said: “The play packs a lot in - including a surprise coup d'theatre that I won't spoil by revealing. This is bold, audacious work - Broadway has not seen anything quite like this before.”
Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus Tickets are available now for performances through June 16, 2019.
