20 years old and she’s still got it, folks!

With the 20th anniversary of [*Chicago*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/22-chicago-tickets) speedily approaching, I took a trip to Broadway’s [Ambassador Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/ambassador-theatre) to witness that timeless story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery… and rest assured, I still hold it near and dear to my heart!

*Chicago* is the second longest-running show in Broadway history, behind Andrew Lloyd Webber’s infamous [*Phantom*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/38-the-phantom-of-the-opera-tickets), and still holds the record of being the longest-running musical revival and longest-running American musical on the Great White Way. So how has this iconic musical managed to outlast its competitors in the increasingly crowded and competitive market place that is Broadway?

One word can sum it all up, really… “Class”… which just so happens to be the title of one of the more reflective numbers in the show. As Velma and Mama Morton were serenading us, asking whatever happened to class, I couldn’t help but think that this production has it in abundance. *Chicago* proves that you don’t need to bombard your audience with a number of lavish sets or elaborate costume changes to put together a winning musical. All you need is a live band on stage, intoxicating the auditorium with that jazz-infused score from the genius that is John Kander and Fred Ebb and sprinkle it with that Bob Fosse-style choreography, and before you know it, you’ve razzle dazzled ‘em! Those tight-fitting, all-black (and often transparent) costumes by William Ivey Long enhance the show’s sensuality with equal measures of male and female exposure and have themselves become as recognisable as the show’s glittering red logo.

You forget how ground-breaking this revival must have been, when it officially opened on Broadway on 14th November 1996. Moments of breaking the fourth wall to introduce the musical numbers and having the conductor of the band interact with the actors on stage, still set *Chicago* apart from its predecessors, and who wouldn’t want to call for their “Exit Music” each time they left the room?

*Chicago* is equally as famous for its revolving casting door, which has seen both Broadway veterans and celebrities from the world of music, TV and film take to the stage and sink their teeth into those coveted principal roles for special limited engagements. Some of the company’s principals have been with the show for quite some time and continue to delight with every performance. NaTasha Yvette Williams’ brassy and sultry Mama Morton, Raymond Bokhour’s ever-loveable Amos and R. Lowe’s skilled, gender-bending performance as Mary Sunshine are always crowd-pleasing and essential parts of the production, offering the degree of stability that takes it smoothly through its many cast changes. Although some would argue that Chicago has been reduced to a star vehicle for celebrities wishing to dip their toes into the world of Broadway, I see it as a living, breathing piece of musical theatre history, which rightfully remains at the Ambassador Theatre and reminds us that all you need is class and, of course, all that jazz!

Bookwriter Kristoffer Diaz is a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his play *The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity*, and choreographer Camille A. Brown is a three-time Tony Award nominee, including for the 2022 revival of Ntozake Shange’s *for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf*. Director Michael Greif is a five-time Tony nominee for directing musicals, including the Lower East Side-set *Rent*.

## What to watch for

- *Hell’s Kitchen* isn’t Keys’ first Broadway credit. She composed music for the 2011 Broadway play Stick Fly, and Keys’s musical style inspired a song in the musical Six.
- *Hell’s Kitchen* includes three never-before-heard songs: “Seventeen,” which Keys wrote specifically for the show, and the previously unreleased “Kaleidoscope” and “The River.” Listen for them on stage!
- Keys got the theatre bug in early childhood. She sang in a school production of *Cats* and played Dorothy in *The Wizard of Oz*.
- Fittingly, the whole lead creative team of *Hell’s Kitchen* are New York natives. Alongside Keys, Diaz hails from Yonkers, Greif from Brooklyn, and Brown from Queens.
- The *Hell’s Kitchen* neighborhood got its name in the late 1800s. There are many different origin stories, but they all refer to the fact that the area was run down back then. Nowadays, *Hell’s Kitchen* is a lively entertainment and restaurant district — so the “kitchen” part is still accurate!
- Lin-Manuel Miranda, another NYC native, premiered his blockbuster musical *Hamilton* at The Public Theater before it became a Broadway phenomenon. Now Keys is following in his footsteps!

Playwright Matthew Lombardo is known for his works that celebrate strong female characters, but he's also not afraid to show their thorns, flaws, and biting humor. That was the case in two of his Broadway works, *High* starring Kathleen Turner and *Looped,* which featured Valerie Harper in a Tony-nominated performance, and it's certaintly what he is offering here. However, unlike in those other fictional pieces created or based on others' lives, here he infuses *Conversations with Mother* with a more personal, intimate bent: the play is semi-autobiographical and takes a page from his own upbringing as a gay son in an Italian household.

Matt Doyle has already played a gay, neurotic character to great acclaim as seen in *Company*, where he stole the show singing "Not Getting Married Today." Caroline Allen is another actor tailor-made for this role given the powerful people she's played in *Sleepless in Seattle* and *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel*.

A classic musical, *Gypsy* takes place just as the once-popular vaudeville industry is declining in the early 20th century. Nonetheless, the constant dreamer and unbearable stage mom Momma Rose looks to push her daughter June into the spotlight at any cost — traveling the country, sweet-talking an agent (and her love interest), and neglecting June's less talented sister, Louise, who against all odds ends up as one of the burlesque scene’s most famous strippers. But as Rose remains in the shadows as Louise’s career ascends, she must come to terms with her own lack of self-love.

- Audra McDonald is so accomplished, she was honored with the National Medal of Arts in 2016 from President Barack Obama and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2017.
- *Gypsy* first premiered on Broadway in 1959; since then, it has enjoyed multiple revivals, including ones directed by Oscar winner Sam Mendes and the librettist himself, Arthur Laurents. 
- Many famous actresses have played Rose, including Ethel Merman, Bernadette Peters, Angela Lansbury, and Patti LuPone.
- George C. Wolfe has worked with McDonald before, previously in *Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed* on Broadway.

King Henry VIII was a Tudor monarch, ruling over England for nearly 40 years. During his time on the throne, he broke away from the Catholic Church and, even more famously, had six wives. While history lessons have taught us all about Henry VIII, they often spend little time on the wives, focusing mostly on how they died or else got rejected.

In the *SIX* musical, the Queens retell their marriage stories through song. Pitting themselves against one another, each wife takes to the mic to see who had it worst, and the winner gets to lead their girl group. But they realize that constant arguing and pettiness isn’t needed — women supporting women are stronger than any king. Summing up centuries of history into 80 minutes of theatre, the *SIX* queens fix each other's crowns while changing your view on Tudor history. 

*SIX* on Broadway includes plenty of tongue-in-cheek jokes about their deaths and divorces, but it also includes firsthand accounts from the women themselves about what their lives, personalities, and talents are independent of Henry. You won’t get that in the history books — only on the Broadway stage. With a women-only cast (the Queens) and band (the Ladies in Waiting), *SIX* on Broadway puts female power and girlbosses on the map.

The show came out of humble beginnings in England, when creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss wrote it during their last year at Cambridge University. At the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, *SIX* caught the attention of producers, and it went on to tour the U.K. and get a five-time Olivier Award-nominated run in London’s West End. The show went on to play Australia and tour the U.S., and *SIX* continues to reign on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

In 2022, *SIX* on Broadway got eight Tony nominations, including Best Musical. The show won for Best Original Score and Best Costume Design, for Gabriella Slade’s Tudor-chic-meets-glitzy-popstar designs.

## What to watch for

- Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss weren’t the only people from the *SIX* team that first joined forces at the University of Cambridge. They met the musical director and lighting designer there, too.
- *SIX* is such a short musical because it was written for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which has a time limit for productions. When *SIX* premiered there in 2018, 10,000 people saw the show in one month. 
- There’s a longstanding myth that Henry VIII wrote the English folk song “Greensleeves” for Anne Boleyn. It’s likely false, but the song is referenced in some of Anne’s *SIX* lyrics, and you’ll hear its melody played on the harpsichord when you walk into the theatre.
- The Queens wear different accessories depending on their fate. The divorced women both wear spiked headbands, and the beheaded ones wear chokers.
- Each wife leads her own musical number, but they come together for a techno rave group number, “Haus of Holbein.” See the queens dance in their neon ruff collars and glasses and get ready to “Get Down” with Anna of Cleves right afterward.

In the space of just a few short years, Six grew from a small festival production to an international musical phenomenon, and like <a href="/show/hamilton">Hamilton</a>, the *Six* Broadway show has burst out of the theatre bubble and into the mainstream.

The Six musical features the testimonies of the six ex-wives of British royal tyrant Henry VIII — told by the Queens themselves at a modern-day girl group concert. They dispute who should be the lead singer of the group, agreeing it should be whoever received the poorest treatment from their former husband. The Queens battle it out with scintillating solos and a handful of gratifying group numbers to boot.

Each Queen is inspired by present-day pop divas. While Catherine of Aragon carries herself like Beyoncé, Anne Boleyn rocks out more like a "Sk8er Boi"-era Avril Lavigne. The smooth tones of an Adele-esque Jane Seymour contrast nicely with Anna of Cleves, who gives us her best Nicki Minaj. And while Katherine Howard brings us seduction à la Britney Spears, the survivor Catherine Parr rounds out the group with the gravitas of Alicia Keys.

Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss wrote Six at 21 years old during their final year at Cambridge University. Presented by Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017, this fresh new musical caught the attention of producers Kenny Wax and Global Musicals, who would bring Six to the Arts Theatre in London's West End in December of that year. Its success snowballed from there, spurred on by the release of the original cast recording in September 2018, which earned the show a global following. Six toured the U.K. and later returned to the West End for an open-ended run.

The "little show that could" was honored with five Olivier Award nominations in 2019, including Best Musical in a category that also included Come From Away, Fun Home, and Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.

Following a North American premiere in Chicago in May 2019, the U.S. cast toured to Cambridge, Massachusetts; Alberta, Canada; and St. Paul, Minnesota. The show shuttered temporarily on its would-be Broadway opening night in 2020, but its eventual 2021 premiere earned Six on Broadway eight Tony nominations and two wins, for Best Original Score and Best Costume Design of a Musical.

There is nothing I enjoy more than discovering a show and then going back to see it again (and again) with someone who has never seen it before. As someone who goes to the theatre for work, I view every night as a treasure hunt for the next theatrical crown jewel, and I love revisiting these gems time and again with friends and family.&nbsp;So when I saw a little show called <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/20737-six-musical-tickets">Six</a> for the first time in London's West End in 2019, I couldn't wait to evangelize about it and take everyone I know. When the show came to the U.S. for a North American tour before heading to Broadway, I took my brother and sister-in-law to the show at American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Mass.&nbsp;And when the show was preparing for its March 2020 Broadway bow, I took a good friend, dancing in the aisles at the last show I saw before the pandemic shutdown.&nbsp;Now, the production is the first new musical to return to Broadway since theatres closed, and in the intervening time, I've actually moved to London, where I was at the musical's first performance back in the West End in May 2021. So being back in New York for Broadway's reopening and seeing Six (for the sixth time, no less) feels like a seminal moment for the show.&nbsp;This time, I also took a good friend, who also had never seen the show or heard any of the music. Watching her experience pure musical theatre elation for a pop-packed 75 minutes was greater than any returning-to-theatre joy I could have imagined. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll dance. It's everything a theatre experience should be and more.&nbsp;So what is Six, you might ask, oh uninitiated one? The show is essentially a pop concert featuring the six wives of&nbsp;Henry VIII belting and riffing about all the "bullsh*t" they had to put up with from the king. Featuring vocal stylings in the vein of Nicki Minaj, Adele, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, and more, the performers deliver a "histo-remix," in a concise and endlessly catchy concert-style show that is part singing competition, part history lesson.&nbsp;Now, you don't need me to tell you how popular the music is, as the U.K. cast recording has been streamed over 100 million times, and writers Toby Moss and Lucy Marlow (also the show's co-director with Jamie Armitage) have scored a deal to write pop music. Not bad for two students at Cambridge who came up with this show in school and premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe.&nbsp;The queendom has now gone global, and the Broadway production is bigger, bolder, and beltier than any Six I've seen yet. From new riffs to surprise costume reveals, every element has been leveled up for New York, leaving no stone unturned. Adrianna Hicks (Catherine of Aragon), Andrea Macasaet (Anne Boleyn), Abby Mueller (Jane Seymour), Brittney Mack (Anna of Cleves), Samantha Pauly (Katherine Howard), and Anna Uzele (Catherine Parr) form a tight ensemble, fulfilling all your girl group dreams and your next karaoke night.&nbsp;The show itself is a retro-mashup with Gabrielle Slade's bedazzled costumes featuring Reformation-inspired silhouettes; Carrie-Anne Ingrouille's choreography showcases Tudor-meets-pop moves; and Emma Bailey's scenery and Tim Deiling's lighting feels like what a royal ballroom might look like in a techno disco.&nbsp;Ultimately, the queens' own stories of overcoming struggles and the show's circuitous journey to Broadway are also beacons for the power of positivity, perseverance, and coming together in times of struggle.
