Wicked becomes Broadway's 8th longest-running show

"Congratulotions" to Broadway's hit musical Wicked, which becomes the 8th longest-running show in Broadway history at the Gershwin Theatre tonight. The smash hit show surpasses Mamma Mia! tonight, on playing its 5759th Broadway performance.

The Broadway musical Wicked opened at the Gershwin Theatre on October 30, 2003, following previews from October 8, and is currently selling tickets through to April 1, 2018.

At the 2004 Tony Awards, the production picked up the trophies for "Best Scenic Design" and "Best Costume Design," as well as "Best Actress in a Musical" for Idina Menzel, who originated the role of Elphaba.

 

Wicked has music & lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, book by Winnie Holzman, based on the novel by Gregory Maguire.

Synopsis: "Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch."

The musical is directed by Joe Mantello, with choreography by James Lynn Abbott, and features scene design by Eugene Lee, costume design by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Kenneth Posner and sound design by Tony Meola.

 

Wicked is produced on Broadway by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt, and David Stone.
