Wayne made his Broadway debut in the ensemble of the Tony Award-winning Best Musical when it premiered in New York in March 2024. He has remained with the cast since and now replaces Tony nominee [Brody Grant](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/brody-grant), who plays his final performance as Ponyboy on September 21 as previously announced.

Broadway is staying gold with *The Outsiders*, winner of the 2024 Tony Award for Best Musical! Tulsa, Oklahoma. Two teenage gangs sustain a rivalry: the well-to-do "Socs" (short for "socials") and the ne'er-do-well "greasers." The greasers, including the iconic characters of Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade, have an often rocky brotherhood, but in a society that's all but abandoned them, it's all they have. *The Outsiders* musical tells a timeless coming-of-age story about finding hope and connection in a rough world.

Hinton published her novel in 1967, the same year the show is set and three years after she started writing the novel while still in high school herself. *The Outsiders* book and its subsequent 1983 film adaptation remain groundbreaking for their naturalistic, unsanitized portrayals of how teenagers talk and act and what happens when they're neglected. The film also launched the careers of then-new actors like Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, and Matt Dillon.

*The Outsiders* Broadway musical features original songs by Justin Levine and the folk duo Jamestown Revival, composed of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance. The book is by Tony-nominated playwright Adam Rapp, known for *The Sound Inside*, and Levine.

Experience a classic story of brotherhood and coming of age as a heartfelt folk musical. Inspired by S. E. Hinton's novel and Francis Ford Coppola's film, this show follows the lives of teenage have-nots whose best hope for survival and acceptance is in their brotherhood.

*The Outsiders* musical premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in spring 2023. It is inspired both by Hinton's 1967 novel and Coppola's 1983 movie, adapting dialogue and narrative elements from each. Director Danya Taymor, in her second Broadway directing gig after *Pass Over*, and Tony-nominated bookwriter Adam Rapp (*The Sound Inside*) provide fresh updates to the characters.

The heart of the story, though, remains the same — like the book, *The Outsiders* on Broadway is poetic without sacrificing grittiness. What made Hinton's novel so groundbreaking for its time (and the film, too) was how naturalistically she portrayed the lives, speech, and mannerisms of struggling, abandoned teenagers — something rarely portrayed in media at the time.

## What to watch for

- S. E. Hinton started writing *The Outsiders* when she was just 15 years old and still in high school! She was 18 when it was published, and she later cameoed in the film as a nurse.
- *The Outsiders* features music by Justin Levine and the folk duo Jamestown Revival, composed of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance. Other shows with folk music include the Tony-winning *Hadestown* and the Tony-nominated *Bright Star*.
- Carmine Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola's father, scored *The Outsiders* film. We wonder if Jamestown Revival incorporated any themes or similar sounds into the stage score!
- The movie launched the careers of multiple then-new actors now known as the Brat Pack, including Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, and Tom Cruise.
- The Tulsa, Oklahoma house where *The Outsiders* was filmed is now a museum featuring props from the movie. Hip-hop artist Danny Boy O'Connor, a lifelong fan of the book and film, bought and restored it from its once-run-down condition in 2016.

It has a deep history and is one of The Shubert Organization's 17 Broadway theatres. Named after the former President of the Shubert Organization, the theatre originally opened in 1927 as the Royale Theatre. Over the years, it has transformed from a movie house to a television studio and then to the landmark theatre we know today. Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre

The Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre opened on January 11, 1927. The venue was originally named the Royale by real-estate magnates, the Chanin Brothers, as part of a three-theatre complex.

In 1930, the Chanins transferred ownership of all three houses to the Shubert Organization. During the Great Depression, control of the Jacobs passed to John Golden, who renamed the theatre after himself and ran it from 1934 to 1936. (This venue is not to be confused with the current John Golden Theatre, which is right next door.)

The Shuberts regained control in 1936 and restored the theatre's name to the Royale. It was renamed the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on May 9, 2005 after the longtime Shubert Organization president.

## How to get to the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Broadway

The Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre is accessible by subway; it is nearest to the 42nd Street - Port Authority Bus Terminal on the A, C, or E line. The theatre is also located near various bus stops: 8th Ave/W 46th St. on the M20 and M104 lines; 7th Ave/W. 44th St. on the M104 line; and 8th Ave/W 43rd St. on the M20, M104, and M34A-SBS lines.
