'The Taming Of The Shrew' by William Shakespeare

The Queens Company all female-ensemble presents The Taming Of The Shrew, by by William Shakespeare, at Walkerspace from the 5 - 20 Nov 2005.

In The Taming Of The Shrew Lucentio loves Bianca. But then so does Gremio and Hortensio. That's the least of his problems since nobody is marrying Bianca until somebody marries her sister Kate. Enter Petruchio, a man with a mission and an empty wallet, on the lookout for a wealth wife. Is Petruchio man enough for Kate? Is Kate woman enough for Petruchio? All bets are off once the couples square off and the games of love and marriage begin.

The comedy is directed by Rebecca Patterson, who is the Queen's Company founding artistic director. Ms Patterson emphasizes that their mission is to offer female artists a broader range of roles with less focus on gender and race. Says Patterson, Fifty percent of the actors in equity are female and they get only forty percent of the roles and the numbers are even lower for actors of color. I think its our responsibility as a New York theater company to reflect our citys diversity. I want to see a stage that looks like a New York City subway stop.
