The off-Broadway non-profit Public Theater presents a new production of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, starring Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac and directed by Tony winner Sam Gold, which begins previews at the Public's Anspacher Theater on June 20, 2017, before an official opening on July 13, and a limited engagement through to September 3, 2017.

Synopsis: "Oscar Isaac returns to The Public in this electrifyingly intimate new production of Shakespeare's eternal drama. Isaac is the prince caught between thought and action, anger and anguish as his uncle assumes the throne left vacant by his murdered father. As the dead king calls to him from the grave, demanding to be avenged, Hamlet is forced to choose between bearing the oppressor's wrong or taking arms against a sea of troubles. The play is widely considered theater's most powerful tragedy about life and death, madness and conscience, and corruption—of the state and of the soul."

Mr. Isaac will be joined in the cast by Roberta Colindrez (Rosencrantz), Peter Friedman (Polonius), Keegan-Michael Key (Horatio), Gayle Rankin (Ophelia, Second Gravedigger), Matthew Saldívar (Guildenstern) and Anatol Yusef (Laertes), with additional casting to be announced at a later date.

The creative team behind Hamlet features scenic design by David Zinn, costume design by Kaye Voyce, lighting design by Mark Barton, sound design by Bray Poor, and musical direction, composition, and performance by cellist Ernst Reijseger.

It was previously announced that Mr. Isaac would take on the role of Hamlet in the summer of 2016 at Theatre for a New Audience in Brooklyn. However, due to artistic differences, that production was postponed.

Oscar Isaac won a Golden Globe in 2016 for 'Show Me a Hero,' and was nominated in 2014 for 'Inside Llewyn Davis.' Other notable screen appearances include 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 'X-Men: Apocalypse,' 'Ex Machina,' 'Drive,' 'A Most Violent Year,' 'Sucker Punch,' and 'Robin Hood.' On stage, he has appeared in the Public Theater's "Shakespeare in the Park" productions of 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Two Gentleman of Verona,' and the off-Broadway productions of 'We Live Here' (also directed by Sam Gold), 'Grace,' and 'Beauty of the Father.'
