The Pool With Five Porches at Player's Loft Theatre
Good Intentions Productions presents The Pool With Five Porches, by Peter Zablotsky, playing at the Player's Loft Theatre from 13 - 26 Aug 2006, as part of the New York International Fringe Festival.
The Pool With Five Porches: The pool is believed to have the power to heal, but the catch is that only the first person to enter the pool after the waters start to roil will be healed; the rest must continue to wait, or be forever denied their miracle.
A man has spent the last four years crawling his way to the edge of the pool; he has been stricken by the plague, and seeks to be made whole. As the play begins a second man bullies his way to the edge of the pool. This new visitor is physically healthy, strong, and imposing -- he seeks not a cure for a physical ailment, but relief from the pain of his family having been killed in an enemy's recent attack. The men are forced to rely on each other for survival as they wait for the pool to again stir.
As the men continue to wait, they reach a point of tolerance, and then start to use each other to piece their lives back together -- one as a craftsman, the other as a trader, and to experience simple human contact. Their reliance deepens until the pool stirs for a final time. As the water starts to roil the men are confronted with the ultimate question: What miracles matter?
Directed by John Ahlers, The Pool With Five Porches features Kent Jackman and Scott Whitehurst.
Set design is by Walter Theodore.
