The Man Who Planted Trees at the Duke On 42nd Street

The New Victory Theater Presents Scotlands award-winning Puppet State Theatre Company's production of The Man Who Planted Trees, as part of the New Victory Scottish Festival, playing at the Duke On 42nd Street from 2 - 11 Oct 2009.

Based on the short story written in the 1950s by French novelist Jean Giono, The Man Who Planted Trees tells the tale of Dog, his quick-witted chum Jean, and a thoughtful shepherd who plants a forest, acorn by acorn, transforming a barren wasteland.

Jean Giono said of his 1953 fable, "I wrote this story to make people love trees, or more precisely to make people love planting trees. Of all my stories this is one of the ones of which I am most proud.

Directed by Ailie Cohen, The Man Who Planted Trees is co-performed by Richard Medrington and Richard Conte.

Set and Puppet Design is by Ailie Cohen, Sound Design is by Barney Strachan and Lighting Design is by Elspeth Murray.

The Man Who Planted Trees has a strong, contemporary environmental message. Its more than a puppet show, says Puppet State Theatre Company Artistic Director, Richard Medrington, theres storytelling and smells of the forest and the scent of lavender. Its not what most people think a puppet show should be like.

The puppet show has received many coveted awards and distinctions, including the Total Theatre Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (2008), Scotlands Eco Prize for Creativity (2007), and Best Childrens Show at Brighton Festival Fringe (2009). The show was also named by Arts & Ecology magazine as one of just 22 artistic projects in the world representing something unique.
