The Glass Menagerie coming to Broadway in Sep 2013
The New York Times reports that the American Repertory Theatre (A.R.T.) in Cambridge, Massachusetts is to bring their production of Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie to Broadway in Sep 2013 for a seventeen week run, at a theatre to be announced.
The play will open on 26 Sep 2013, following previews from 05 Sep 2013, and run through to early Jan 2014.
The production of The Glass Menagerie features direction by John Tiffany, and stars Cherry Jones (Amanda), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Laura), Zachary Quinto (Tom) and Brian J. Smith (The Gentleman Caller), who will reprise the roles they originated when the production played the A.R.T. from 02 Feb 2013 to 17 Mar 2013.
The production opened at the A.R.T. in Cambridge, Massachusetts to excellent reviews: "Every so often, as this glorious production allows, it lights up the darkness like a divine benediction" (New York Times); "In Tennessee Williams's words, does not go to the moon. It goes much further." (WBUR Arts); Cherry Jones' turn as Amanda Wingfield ... is agonizingly, painfully perfect (Boston Herald review).
The Glass Menagerie is set in St Louis in the 1930s and follows the story of the Wingfield family and the troubled relationship between an aging, overbearing mother Amanda andher frail daughter Laura. It is told in recalled memories by Tom Wingfield, who is torn between his obligation to his mother and sister and his desire to break away from them.
The show will feature set and costume design by Bob Crowley, lighting by Natasha Katz and sound by Clive Goodwin.
The Glass Menagerie will be the American Repertory Theatre's second production to transfer to Broadway this year. Their production of Stephen Schwartz's and Roger O. Hirson's musical 'Pippin,' opens at the Music Box Theatre this evening.
The Glass Menagerie had its Broadway premiere in 1945, directed by Eddie Dowling and Margo Jones, it starred Laurette Taylor (Amanda), Eddie Dowling as (Tom) and Julie Haydon as (Laura).
