The Encounter to play Broadway's Golden Theatre
The Complicite theater company's production of The Encounter, conceveid, directed and performed by Simon McBurney, will play a limited engagement at Broadway's Golden Theatre from 20 September 2016 through to 8 January 2017. Opening night is set for 29 September.
The production is inspired by the novel "Amazon Beaming" by Petru Popescu.
Synopsis: "In 1969, Loren McIntyre, a National Geographic photographer, found himself lost among the people of the remote Javari Valley in Brazil. It was an encounter that was to change his life: bringing the limits of human consciousness into startling focus. Simon McBurney traces McIntyre's journey into the depths of the Amazon rainforest, using binaural technology (3D audio) to build an intimate and shifting world of sound. Audience members are given headphones to be worn throughout the performance in order to fully experience the visually stunning world created on stage - and inside their heads."
Richard Katz will stand in for Mr. McBurney at certain performances.
Co-directed by Kirsty Housley, the creative team behind The Encounter features scenic design by Michael Levine, lighting design by Paul Anderson, sound design by Gareth Fry and Pete Malkin, and projection design by Will Duke.
The Encounter heads to Broadway, following productions at the Edinburgh Festival, London's Barbican and all over Europe.
Simon McBurney earned a Tony nomination for directing 'The Chairs' in 1998. He also directed the 2008 revival of Arthur Miller's 'All My Sons' at Broadway's Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. Other theatre directing credits include the self-penned 'A Disappearing Number,' as well as 'The Elephant Vanishes,' 'The Master and Margarita' and 'The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui.' His screen acting credits include "The Conjuring 2," "Rev," "The Borgias," and "Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation."
