The Keen Company presents The Conscientious Objector, by by Michael Murphy, opening at Theatre Row's Clurman Theatre on 18 Mar 2008, following previews from 4 Mar and running through to 19 Apr 2008.
The Conscientious Objector: In early 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. informed his advisors that he intended to play a major role in the anti-war movement, advocating immediate withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Vietnam. No major figure of Dr. Kings stature had yet been willing to take such a dramatic stand, even those thought to oppose the war, such as Robert Kennedy and George McGovern.
King knew he would be turning past allies like President Johnson into powerful enemies and reviving the animus of old enemies as well. Kings inner circle feared he would trigger a political backlash that could undo the progress made in civil rights. Drawing from the historical record, including the FBIs relentless and often illegal surveillance, and the White Houses infamous secret telephone recordings. The troubling story of dissent in America during a time of war.
Directed by Carl Forsman The Conscientious Objector features DB Woodside, John Cullum, Chad Carstarphen, Jimonn Cole, Brian Hicks, Jonathan Hogan, Rachel Leslie, James Miles, Steve Routman, Geddeth Smith and Harold Suratt.
The creative team comprises Beowulf Boritt (sets), Theresa Squire (costumes), Josh Bradford (lighting) and Daniel Baker and Daniel Kluger (sound).
