The 71st Annual Tony Awards: And the Winners are...
Last night the New York Theatre Guide was invited to attend the Winner's Room of The 71st Annual Tony Awards to greet the freshly-crowned Broadway victors after they left the stage of Radio City Music Hall. Dear Evan Hansen turned out to be the biggest winner of the night, picking up a total of 6 Tony Awards including "Best Musical," "Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical" for Ben Platt and "Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical" for Rachel Bay Jones. Hello, Dolly! was close behind, picking up 4 of the coveted trophies including "Best Revival of a Musical," "Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical" for Bette Midler and "Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical" for Gavin Creel.
As for the plays, the Lincoln Center Theater's production of Oslo took home the biggest prize of the night with "Best Play," as well as "Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Play" for Michael Aronov. The late August Wilson was honored with "Best Revival of a Play" for the Manhattan Theatre Club production of Jitney, whilst Laurie Metcalf picked up her first Tony award for "Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Play" for A Doll's House, Part 2, Kevin Kline won his third Third Tony for his performance in Present Laughter and Cynthia Nixon (who also alternates in the leading role of Regina) was awarded "Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Play" for her performance as Birdie in Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes.
