It's going to be a purple summer (and fall). The musical Spring Awakening will return to NYC for its first Off-Broadway revival this fall at Studio Seaview, with exact dates to be announced.
Adapted from the same-named play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening follows a group of teenagers navigating sexuality and coming-of-age in late 19th-century Germany, with a folk and alternative rock score. The musical features a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, with famous songs including "Mama Who Bore Me," "The Bitch of Living," and "Those You've Known."
Tony Award winner Danya Taymor (The Outsiders, John Proctor Is the Villain) will direct the production, Spring Awakening's fourth in NYC in 20 years. The musical premiered off Broadway in 2006 and transferred to Broadway that same year, running for two years and winning eight Tony Awards in 2007, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score. A critically acclaimed revival ran from 2015-16.
Celia Rowlson-Hall will choreograph the show in her theatrical debut, and music supervision is by Or Matias. Cast and additional creative team members for Spring Awakening off Broadway have yet to be announced.
