George Abud, Lilli Cooper join 'Spring Awakening' Off-Broadway cast

Tony nominee Cooper returns to the show almost 20 years after appearing in the original Broadway production, and Emmy winner Abud appears in the musical for the first time.

Emmy Award winner George Abud (The Band’s Visit, Lempicka) and Tony nominee Lilli Cooper (Tootsie, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) have joined the cast of Spring Awakening off Broadway, playing at Studio Seaview for a limited run from November 27 to April 4. Opening night is December 17.

Cooper returns to Spring Awakening nearly 20 years after making her Broadway debut as Martha in the show's original production, and she now plays The Adult Women. Abud appears in Spring Awakening for the first time as The Adult Men.

They join the previously announced Jack Bateman as Georg, Jada Simone Clark as Thea, Leif Coomer as Ernst, Ryo Kamibayashi as Moritz, Ashlyn Maddox as Wendla, Nando Morland as Otto, Antonio Porciello as Hanschen, Khadija Sankoh as Martha, Grace Slear as Anna, Tyler Jordan Wesley as Melchior, and Amalia Yoo as Ilse.

Set in 19th-century Germany, Spring Awakening is a coming-of-age musical about teens exploring sexuality, repression, desire, and despair with little guidance from the adults in their lives. The celebrated musical by Steven Sater (book and lyrics) and Duncan Sheik (music), adapted from Frank Wedekind's 1891 play, won eight Tony Awards in 2007, including Best Musical.

Tony Award Danya Taymor (The Outsiders, John Proctor Is the Villain) leads a creative team that also includes choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall, music supervisor Or Matias, set designers Christine Jones and Brett Banakis, costume designer Kaye Voyce, lighting designer Brian MacDevitt, sound designer Cody Spencer, special effects designer Jeremy Chernick, music director and conductor Cynthia Meng, music coordinator David Lai, intimacy coordinator Ann James, fight coordinator Drew Leary, creative consultant C.A. Johnson, associate director Miranda Cornell, voice and text coach Gigi Buffington, and production stage manager Elizabeth Allen.
