Soul Doctor arriving on Broadway
The Broadway premiere of Soul Doctor: Journey of a Rock-Star Rabbi, which tells the true story of the beloved and controversial father of popular Jewish music, Shlomo Carlebach, will open at Broadway's Circle in the Square (which has been dark since the revival of the musical 'Godspell' closed in Jun 2012) on 15 Aug 2012, following previews from 17 Jul 2013.
Written and directed by Daniel Wise, the show features music by Carlebach, lyrics by David Schechter, with additional music and arrangements by Nina Simone.
Soul Doctor tells the story of the beloved yet controversial father of popular Jewish music, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach and explores his unlikely friendship with the 'High Priestess of Soul' Nina Simone. Beginning with his childhood escape from Nazi Germany, the show takes us on a musical odyssey through the challenges and triumphs of this cultural phenomenon, as he becomes a rabbinical prodigy in America, discovers Gospel and Soul music during his unlikely friendship with Simone, and has a meteoric rise as a 'Rock Star Rabbi' in the 1960's, performing with Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead.
Eric Anderson, who starred in the Off-Broadway engagement of Soul Doctor, which played at the New York Theatre Workshop from 30 Jul - 19 Aug 2012, will once again reprise the role of 'Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach.'
The New York Theatre Workshop production also starred Erica Ash as 'Nina Simome,' Meredith Kaye Clarke, Ryan Strand, Kenny Morris, Rachel Stern, Dionne Figgins, Ryan Duncan and Julia Osborne.
Further casting for the Broadway premiere is still to be announced.
The creative team features set design by Neil Patel, costumes by Maggie Morgan, lighting design by Jeff Croiter amd sound design byJohn Shivers and David Patridge.
The musical is being produced on Broadway by Jeremy Chess, Joel Kahn, Jerome Levy, Edward L. Steinberg, Robert Beckwitt and and Danny Boy Productions.
