Some Like It Hot is eyeing a 2020 Broadway bow
The beloved 1959 Billy Wilder comedy is in development as a Broadway musical.
Some Like It Hot, based on one of the most beloved film comedies of all time, is slated for a Broadway premiere in 2020, according to producers Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, and The Shubert Organization.
"Some Like It Hot is one of the greatest film comedies ever made," they said in a joint statement. "We are grateful to MGM for allowing us to tackle the challenge of translating the film's singular energy and magic to the stage."
The 1959 Billy Wilder comedy follows "two musicians who witness a mob-connected murder and flee town, disguising themselves as women in an all-female band" and famously starred Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe. In 1960, it received a total of six Academy Award nominations, winning "Best Costume Design".
The producers have assembled a top-calibre creative team for the in-the-works stage adaptation, including director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw (currently represented on Broadway by Mean Girls, Disney's Aladdin, and The Book of Mormon, and in London's West End with Dreamgirls), a book by Matthew Lopez (currently represented in London by the critically acclaimed two-part epic The Inheritance), and a score by Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman (the award-winning team behind Hairspray).
Jonathan Glickman, President, MGM's Motion Picture Group and Head of Live Stage Theatrical Productions, commented: "Some Like It Hot is one of the crown jewels of MGM's library. Craig, Neil and the Shubert Organization have assembled a world class creative team and we can't wait to see it on Broadway."
Craig Zadan & Neil Meron recently enjoyed great success with their television production of "Jesus Christ Superstar - Live in Concert".
Further details on Some Like It Hot, including a venue and casting information, will be released at a later date.
