'Slave Play' to return to Broadway this fall
Jeremy O. Harris's play originally opened on Broadway in 2019.
Jeremy O. Harris's Slave Play will return to Broadway in November. The new production will go up at the August Wilson Theatre, which currently houses Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu's Pass Over until October 10.
Slave Play will begin performances November 23 ahead of a December 2 opening night. It will run through January 23, 2022. This will be the play's second Broadway run, with the first running from September 10, 2019 through January 19, 2020 after premiering off Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop. In 2020, the Broadway production broke the record for most Tony nominations for a play with 12, though it came away with none at the 74th annual Tony Awards ceremony on September 26.
Much of the cast from the original Broadway and Off-Broadway runs will return to their roles. These include Tony Award nominee Ato Blankson-Wood, Tony Award nominee Chalia La Tour, Irene Sofia Lucio, Tony Award nominee Annie McNamara, and Paul Alexander Nolan. Antoinette Crowe-Legacy will join the cast as Kaneisha, a role Harris wrote for Crowe-Legacy and which she originated in the first developmental production of Slave Play at Yale's 2017 Langston Hughes Festival.
In Slave Play, three interracial couples in which the Black partners find they are no longer attracted to their white partners. The couples attend Antebellum Sexual Performance Therapy, and by portraying the experience, Harris examines the lasting effects of slavery and racism on Black people's relationships and experiences.
Slave Play tickets will be available soon.
