Sing Street postpones Broadway opening to 2021-2022 season

The new musical, based on the 2016 film, plans to open next winter.

The producers of Sing Street announced on Monday that the musical will postpone its opening to the 2021-2022 season, with a target opening date for winter 2021/22. Based on the 2016 movie about a group of preparatory school boys who form a band, the musical was originally scheduled to open in April at the Lyceum Theatre but was shuttered due to the Covid-19 theatre shutdown.

"We want to be responsible and strategic about creating a proper runway to launch our new musical on Broadway, which includes a longer period of time from when Broadway theater reopens," the producers said in a statement. "We will announce a new date to open on Broadway sometime between the winter of 2021 and 2022 based on the availability of a Shubert Theater."

Sing Street premiered off Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop in 2019. The musical features a book by Enda Walsh (Once), with music and lyrics by John Carney and Gary Clark. Carney wrote and directed the original film, which is loosely based on his own experience. Rebecca Taichman directed the production and is set to direct the Broadway production as well.
