*Uncle Vanya* is a play that tells the story of the title character, Uncle Vanya, and his niece, Sonya, who live a life of solitude managing Sonya's father's rural Russian farm — until Sonya's father and wife move in and disrupt their isolation. Tensions run high as all the characters grapple with unrequited love, the passage of time, and unrealized dreams.

*Uncle Vanya* is one of Chekhov's most well-known plays. The play, which originally premiered in 1899 at the Moscow Art Theatre, has stood the test of time through many revivals and translations. The 2024 production is *Uncle Vanya*'s 11th Broadway run— the most recent revival in 2000, starring Laura Linney, Derek Jacobi, and Brian Murray, was nominated for two Tony Awards, and a 1974 revival was nominated for three.

The new *Uncle Vanya* revival features a similarly critically acclaimed creative team. Schreck is best known for writing and starring in *What the Constitution Means to Me* on Broadway, and Neugebauer's Broadway production of *The Waverly Gallery* was nominated for the Best Revival of a Play Tony Award.

Uncle Vanya Broadway Tickets | Starring Steve Carell

This Chekhov classic returns to Broadway in a new translation by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony Award nominee Heidi Schreck. See this time-honored story anew, following a family whose lives get upended as they struggle with unrequited love and unfulfilled potential.

The *Uncle Vanya* play centers on the title character and Sonya, his niece. Together, they live on Sonya’s father’s rural farm. However, their peace and isolation break when Sonya’s father and younger wife move in, which causes conflict and tension as they all force each other to confront their lingering desires, haunted pasts, and uncertain futures. 

Written by the famous playwright Anton Chekhov, *Uncle Vanya* is one of his most well-known works. The play premiered in 1899 at the Moscow Arts Theatre to acclaim. Since then, the play received numerous revivals — this production marks the 10th revival of *Uncle Vanya* on Broadway. Lila Neugebauer, also represented on Broadway this season with *Appropriate* starring Sarah Paulson, directs.

Previous runs of *Uncle Vanya* in New York earned numerous honors. The 1974 revival was nominated for three Tony Awards. The 2000 revival, the most recent one until now, received two nominations: Amy Ryan for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play and Tony Walton for Best Scenic Design. 

*Uncle Vanya* also inspired lots of films, including a 2020 filmed performance of the play starring Toby Jones, Aimee Lou Wood, and Richard Armitage in London.

## What to watch for 

- The original production of *Uncle Vanya* was supposed to premiere at the Maly Theatre, but when its governing committee asked Chekhov for major revisions, he chose to submit the play to the Moscow Arts Theatre instead.
- Chekhov viewed the play as a comedy, while the original director, Konstantin Stanislavski, viewed it as a tragedy. Nowadays, people often call *Uncle Vanya* a tragicomedy. 
- One of the characters mentions the importance of forest preservation and criticizes forest destruction in the play, making *Uncle Vanya* one of the first plays to mention environmental issues. 
- The show's impressive creative team includes set designer Mimi Lien, who focuses on the interaction between audience and environment in her work. She won a Tony for her set design on *Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812*. 
- *Uncle Vanya*, like most of Chekhov's plays, is famous for its subtext. The characters often say one thing but mean something else, so watch and listen to the actors closely! 
- The Oscar-winning 2021 film *Drive My Car* features a production of *Uncle Vanya*, and the film's characters' emotional struggles reflect those of *Uncle Vanya*'s characters.

Molina is an accomplished actor with a significant body of work spanning film, television, and stage. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Doctor Octopus in *Spider-Man 2* and *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, Diego Rivera in *Frida* opposite Salma Hayek, and Comte de Reynaud in *Chocolat*, among dozens of other film roles.

Molina's film credits also include notable performances in *Boogie Nights*, *An Education*, and *Love Is Strange* opposite John Lithgow. On television, Molina starred in series like *Law & Order: LA* and made guest appearances on shows like *Angie Tribeca*.

Though he's best known for his screen roles, Molina got his start on stage in London's West End in 1980, when he earned an Olivier Award nomination for Best Newcomer in a Play for his performance in *Oklahoma!* He went on to receive Tony Award nominations for all three of his Broadway roles before *Uncle Vanya*: Tevye in *Fiddler on the Roof*, Mark Rothko in 
*Red*, and Yvan in *Art*.

Anika Noni Rose stars in Lincoln Center Theater's revival of [*Uncle Vanya*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/33211-uncle-vanya) on Broadway at the [Vivian Beaumont Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/vivian-beaumont-theater) from April 2.

Anika Noni Rose is best known for her voice role in Disney's animated film *The Princess and the Frog* as Tiana, the first African American Disney princess. In the film world, Rose also played Lorrell Robinsion in *Dreamgirls*, alongside Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson, and the film adaptation of Ntozake Shange's play *For Colored Girls* as Yasmine.

Rose's stage career earned her a Tony Award for her performance as Emmie Thibodeaux in *Caroline, or Change*. She later earned another Tony nomination for playing Beneatha Younger in *A Raisin in the Sun*, and her other Broadway credits include *Cat on a Hot Tin Roof* and *Footloose*.

On television, Rose has appeared in dozens of TV shows including *The Good Wife*, *Little Fires Everywhere*, and *Private Practice*.

Jayne Houdyshell stars as Mrs. Shinn in the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/hugh-jackman">Hugh Jackman</a>-led revival of&nbsp;The Music Man,&nbsp;which will start performances on Broadway on April 7, 2021.

Houdyshell&nbsp;was born on September 25, 1953&nbsp;in Topeka, Kansas, and is a Tony Award-winning Broadway favorite.

She attended Topeka High School, graduating in 1971, and would go on to study at Oakland University's Academy of Dramatic Art in Rochester, Michigan, graduating with honors in 1974. For the rest of the 1970s, Houdyshell appeared in regional productions across the country until finally moving to New York City in 1980.

She continued her career as a traveling actor&nbsp;but would later establish herself on both the Broadway and Off-Broadway theatre scenes. She appeared in&nbsp;True Love&nbsp;at the Zipper Theatre in 2001, and her breakthrough role came with the 2004 <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/public-theater">Public Theater</a> production of Lisa Kron's&nbsp;Well. Her performance as Ann earned her an Obie Award, as well as Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel, and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations. The production would also transfer to Broadway in March 2006, marking Houdyshell's Broadway debut, and she went on to earn her first Tony Award nomination and received a Theatre World Award for her performance.

From then on, she became a regular on the Broadway stage. She took on the role of Madame Morrible in the smash hit musical&nbsp;Wicked&nbsp;from November 2006 to August 2007 (reprising the role on Broadway in June 2008 and on the national tour in May 2010) and starred as&nbsp;Mae Peterson in the 2009 Broadway revival of&nbsp;Bye Bye Birdie. After assuming the role of&nbsp;Miss Prism in the 2011 revival of&nbsp;The Importance of Being Earnest (from March to June), she was cast as&nbsp;Hattie Walker in the 2011 revival of&nbsp;Follies, running from August 2011 through to January 2012 and resulting in her second Tony Award nomination. In fall 2012, she starred as&nbsp;Barbara in the Broadway premiere of&nbsp;Dead Accounts,&nbsp;and in 2013, she received a special Drama Desk Award for "her artistry as an exceptionally versatile and distinctive Broadway and Off-Broadway performer." Later that same year, she returned to Broadway to star as the&nbsp;Nurse in an Orlando Bloom and Condola Rashad-led revival of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/romeo-juliet">Romeo and Juliet</a>, which was also broadcast in cinemas in 2014.

She went on to star as&nbsp;Gloria Drexel opposite Larry David in his self-penned comedy&nbsp;Fish in the Dark from February to August 2015 and, following a hugely successful run with Roundabout Theatre Company at off-Broadway's Laura Pels Theatre in the fall of 2015,&nbsp;The Humans&nbsp;transferred to Broadway in January 2016. For her performance as&nbsp;Deirdre Blake, Houdyshell won her first Tony Award and also picked up a Drama Desk Award. In 2017, she played&nbsp;Anne Marie in Lucas Hnath's Broadway premiere of&nbsp;A Doll's House, Part 2, running from March to September 2017 and earning her another Tony Award nomination.

Houdyshell's numerous Off-Broadway credits include the 2004 Shakespeare in the Park&nbsp;production of&nbsp;Much Ado About Nothing, the 2006 <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/playwrights-horizons">Playwrights Horizons</a> production of&nbsp;The Pain and the Itch, a Lucille Lortel-nominated performance in the 2007 Manhattan Theatre Club production of&nbsp;The Receptionist, an Outer Critics Circle-nominated performance in Lincoln Center Theater's 2008 production of&nbsp;The New Century, a Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk-nominated performance in the title role of MCC Theater's&nbsp;Coraline&nbsp;in 2009,&nbsp;The Language Archive&nbsp;for Roundabout Theatre Company in 2010,&nbsp;Harrison, TX: Three Plays by Horton Foote&nbsp;for Primary Stages in 2012, and the 2018 MCC Theater production of&nbsp;Relevance.

On screen, Houdyshell's most notable credits include recurring roles as&nbsp;Judge Ruth Linden on Law &amp; Order: Special Victims Unit&nbsp;and as&nbsp;Rose Offer in Odyssey,&nbsp;as well as guest roles in series such as Law &amp; Order,&nbsp;Law &amp; Order: Criminal Intent,&nbsp;Blue Bloods,&nbsp;Elementary,&nbsp;The Accidental Wolf,&nbsp;The Good Fight,&nbsp;and Quantico.&nbsp;Her film credits include Changing Lanes,&nbsp;Maid in Manhattan,&nbsp;Garden State,&nbsp;Trust the Man,&nbsp;Everybody's Fine,&nbsp;The Bounty Hunter,&nbsp;and Downsizing.

William Jackson Harper stars as Astrov in [*Uncle Vanya*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/33211-uncle-vanya) on Broadway at the [Vivian Beaumont Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/vivian-beaumont-theater) through June 16.

Harper is best known for his Emmy Award-nominated performance as Chidi Anagonye in the TV show *The Good Place*. He is also a stage veteran who made his Broadway debut as Stokely Carmichael/James Harrison in 2013's *All the Way*.

His numerous Off-Broadway credits include *Primary Trust*, *After The Blast*, *Ruined*, and *Titus Andronicus*. He also starred opposite Ali Ahn in a 2012 production of *Romeo and Juliet* in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Designed by Eero Saarinen with the collaboration of Jo Mielziner, the Vivian Beaumont Theater opened on October 21, 1965, with a revival of *Georg Büchner's Danton's Death* starring James Earl Jones and Stacy Keach.

The venue was named after heiress Vivian Beaumont Allen, who donated $3 million for its construction but died in 1962 before its completion. The theatre shares a building with the Off-Broadway venue the [Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lincoln-center-mitzi-e-newhouse-theater). Lincoln Center Theater has operated both since 1985. LCT's intimate [Clare Tow Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lincoln-center-claire-tow-theater), situated on the roof of the Vivian Beaumont, was added in 2012.

The Vivian Beaumont Theater is the only Broadway theatre not in the theatre district around Times Square. Located within Lincoln Center near 65th Street and 10th Avenue, it is the northernmost and westernmost Broadway house. The venue is also one of five Broadway theatres named for a woman.
