'Saturday Church' completes Off-Broadway cast
The new musical, adapted from Damon Cardasis's 2017 film of the same name, features songs by Sia and Honey Dijon and a book by Cardasis and James Ijames.
New York Theatre Workshop has set the complete cast for its Off-Broadway production of Saturday Church, a new musical adaptation of the 2017 film. Performances run from August 27 to October 12, with opening night on September 15.
Joining previously announced stars Bryson Battle (The Voice), Tony winner J. Harrison Ghee (Some Like It Hot), and Tony winner Joaquina Kalukango (Paradise Square) are Anania, Primo Thee Ballerino, Veyonce Deleon, Dava Huesca, Kristolyn Lloyd, Kareem Marsh, Jackson Kanawha Perry, Caleb Quezon, and Wade Watson.
Additionally, B Noel Thomas will now replace the previously announced Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, who will now serve as creative consultant and producer due to scheduling conflicts.
Swings are Fernell Hogan, Michael Samarie George, and J'Quay Gibbs.
Saturday Church features music and lyrics by Grammy Award nominee Sia, with additional music by Grammy winner Honey Dijon. With a book and additional lyrics by Emmy nominee Damon Cardasis and Pulitzer Prize winner James Ijames, the show is adapted from Cardasis's 2017 film about Ulysses, a queer teenage boy torn between his religious community and Saturday Church, an LGBTQ+ sanctuary where he can be accepted for his full self.
The creative team features director Whitney White; choreographer Darrell Grand Moultrie, scenic designer David Zinn; costume designer Qween Jean; lighting designer Adam Honoré; sound designer Gareth Owen; music director Deah Love Harriot; music producer Chris Penny; music supervisors, orchestrators, and arrangers Jason Michael Webb and Luke Solomon; hair and wig designer Darius Thomas; vocal coach Rachel Christopher; fight choreogeapher Dave Anzuelo/Unkle Dave's Fighthouse; and intimacy coordinator Kelsey Rainwater.
