The Donmar Warehouse's production of Red, the biggest Tony Award-winner of the 2009-2010 season, plays its final performance at the Golden Theatre on 27 Jun 2010 as scheduled.
The production played 101 regular performances and 22 previews, and recouped its $2.25 million production costs the week ending the 20 Jun 2010.
Red won six 2010 Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Director (Michael Grandage), Best Featured Actor (Eddie Redmayne), Best Set (Christopher Oram), Best Lighting (Neil Austin) and Best Sound Design (Adam Cork). John Logan's new American play, Red, opened at the John Golden Theatre on 1 Apr 2010, following previews from 11 Mar and played a limited engagement through to the 27 Jun 2010.
The show opened to mixed, but mostly positive reviews: I was completely engaged (newyorktheatreguide.com); Intense and exciting (NY Times); Never takes off (NY Post); Electrifying play of ideas (Variety).
Red stars Alfred Molina and Eddie Redmayne, who created their roles in the world premiere production at the Donmar. The production is directed by Donmar artistic director Michael Grandage. Red marks playwright Logan's Broadway debut.
Red is set in 1958 as New York artist Mark Rothko (Alfred Molina) has received the art world's largest commission to create a series of murals for The Four Seasons restaurant in the new Seagram building on Park Avenue. Under the watchful gaze of his young assistant, Ken (Eddie Redmayne) and the threatening presence of a new generation of artists, Rothko faces his greatest challenge yet: to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.
The production is designed by Christopher Oram, with lighting design by Neil Austin. Composer and sound designer is Adam Cork.
Red had its world premiere at the Donmar Warehouse, where it played from 3 Dec 2009 - 6 Feb 2010. The production was nominated for three 2010 Olivier Awards, including Best Play, with Eddie Redmayne winning the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
