Rebecca: additional principal casting announced
Additional principal casting has been announced for the new musical Rebecca, based on the classic novel by Daphne du Maurier, opening at the Broadhurst theatre on 22 Apr 2012, following previews from 27 Mar 2012.
Tam Mutu will star as 'Maxim de Winter,' Karen Mason as 'Mrs. Danvers,' James Barbour as 'Jack Favell,' John Dossett as 'Frank Crawley,' Donna English as 'Beatrice de Winter' and Nick Wyman as 'Giles,' will join the previously announced Sierra Boggess as 'I.'
Based on the classic Daphne du Maurier novel (and later turned into an Oscar-winning film by Alfred Hitchcock), Rebecca is the story of Maxim de Winter, his new wife ("I") and Mrs. Danvers, the controlling and manipulative housekeeper of Maxim's West Country estate of Manderley - where the memory of his first wife, the glamorous and mysterious Rebecca, still casts a shadow.
Rebecca features original book and lyrics by Michael Kunze, music by Sylvester Levay, English book adaptation by two-time Tony Award winner Christopher Hampton (Sunset Boulevard), English lyrics by Hampton and Kunze, and direction by Tony Award-winner Michael Blakemore (Kiss Me, Kate; City of Angeles; Noises Off) and Francesca Zambello (Little Mermaid).
Rebecca had its world premiere in 2006 at Vereinigte Buhnen Wien in Vienna, where it played for more than three years. Productions of Rebecca have also played Budapest, Hungary; Helsinki, Finland; Stuttgart, Germany; St. Gallen, Switzerland and at the Imperial Theatre in Tokyo.
The musical is being produced on Broadway by Ben Sprecher, Louise Forlenza, The Shubert Organization, Peter Bezemes, Tony Fusco, Larry Feinman, Nanda Anand and Peter Bogyo by special arrangement with/and based on the Vereinigte Buhnen Wien GmbH production.
Bios:
Tam Mutu (Maxim de Winter) is making his broadway debut. He recently starred as 'Anatoly' in Michael Harrison's production of 'Chess,' at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. Mutu was part of the original cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical 'Love Never Dies' at London's Adelphi Theatre, as the 'Alternate Phantom.' His work as a member for the National Theatre Company includes 'Longaville' in 'Loves Labours Lost,' and in the original cast of 'Anything Goes,' 'South Pacific,' and 'Royal Hunt of the Sun.' He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company for a season where his work included 'Tybalt' in 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Edmund' in 'King Lear.'
Karen Mason (Mrs. Danvers) most recently originated the role of 'The Queen of Hearts' in the Broadway production of 'Wonderland.' She originated the role of 'Tanya' on Broadway in Abba's 'Mamma Mia!' Her other Broadway credits include 'Hairspray,' 'Sunset Boulevard' (u/s 'Norma Desmond'), 'Jerome Robbins' Broadway' and 'Play Me a Country Song.' Off-Broadway she has starred in 'Carnival,' 'And the World Goes 'Round' and 'A Bundle of Nerves.' Mason is a ten-time MAC Award winner and has won the MAC Award for Major Female Vocalist of the Year for six consecutive years.
James Barbour (Jack Favell) most recently starred in the world premiere of 'Nightmare Alley' at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. His Broadway credits are 'A Tale of Two Cities,' 'Assassins,' 'Urinetown,' 'Jane Eyre,' 'Beauty and the Beast,' 'Carousel' and 'Cyrano - The Musical.'
John Dossett (Frank Crowley) was nominated for a Tony for his portrayal of 'Herbie' in the 2003 revival of 'Gypsy.' Other Broadway credits include: 'The Constant Wife,' 'Democracy,' 'Dinner at Eight,' 'An Almost Holy Picture,' 'Mamma Mia!,' 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,' 'Ragtime,' 'Prelude to a Kiss,' 'Mastergate,' 'Fifth of July' and 'King of Schnorrers.' TV: "Hack," "Law & Order," "Sex and the City," "Gossip Girl" and "John Adams" (HBO). Film: "That Night," "Longtime Companion" and "Little Manhattan."
Donna English (Beatrice de Winter) has appeared on Broadway in 'Lend Me a Tenor' and 'Broadway.' Off-Broadway credits include 'Forbidden Broadway: Special Victims Unit,' 'Taking a Chance on Love,' 'Ruthless' and 'Company.' Additional New York and regional production credits include Princesses, Harold and Maude, The Sound of Music, O. Henry's Lovers and The Gig.
Nick Wyman (Giles) has appeared on Broadway in 'Catch Me If You Can,' 'A Tale of Two Cities,' 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' and 'Les Misérables.' His Off-Broadway credits include 'Howard Katz,' 'Take Me Along,' 'Three in the Back, Two in the Head,' 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame,' 'The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940,' 'Kennedy of Colonus' and 'Paris Lights.'
