Complete casting has been set for [*Primary Trust*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25219-primary-trust-tickets), a new play by Eboni Booth that continues Roundabout Theatre Company's spring season. Off-Broadway performances run from May 4 to July 2, with opening night on May 25.

Joining the previously announced William Jackson Harper (Emmy nominee for *The Good Place*) as Kenneth and April Matthis (*The Piano Lesson*) as Wally’s Waiter are Eric Berryman (*Atlanta*) as Bert and Jay O. Sanders (*Girl From the North Country*) as Clay.

*Primary Trust* centers on Kenneth, a mid-30s bookstore worker who gets a new lease on life after getting laid off. Encouraged by an eccentric waiter, he breaks from his usual routine and faces a world he's been avoiding.

Knud Adams (*English*, *I'm Revolting*) directs *Primary Trust* off Broadway.

The *Primary Trust* play centers on 36-year-old Kenneth, who works at a bookstore by day and drinks mai tais at the tiki bar by night. His life changes when he gets abruptly laid off, and he needs a fresh start. Urged on by an eccentric waiter, he discovers the world anew, and his life transforms in unexpected and even comical ways. 

Booth is a writer and actor whose last Off-Broadway show was *Paris*. That show, about a group of big-box store workers, premiered at Atlantic Theater Company in 2020. She has also performed in Off-Broadway shows including *Dance Nation*, *After the Blast*, *The Cider House Rules*, and *Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again.* On TV, Booth has appeared in shows like *The Good Fight* and *Daredevil*.

Knud Adams directs *Primary Trust* off Broadway. In 2022, he directed *I'm Revolting* and the award-winning *English*, both at Atlantic Theater Company. Both those shows were also world premieres. *Primary Trust* marks his Roundabout Theatre Company debut.

Starring in *Primary Trust* in New York is William Jackson Harper, an Emmy Award nominee for playing Chidi Anagonye on *The Good Place* and the star of *The Resort* on Peacock. Also starring is April Matthis, a veteran New York theatre actress who made her Broadway debut in 2022's *The Piano Lesson* opposite Samuel L. Jackson.

The main character of the *Primary Trust* play is Kenneth. The 36-year-old works at a bookstore by day and haunts his local tiki bar, sipping mai tais, by night. That is, until he's laid off. But what seems like an ending might actually be a new beginning. Encouraged by a quirky waiter, he finally faces a world he's avoided for a long time, and his life transforms.

Eboni Booth makes her Roundabout playwriting debut with the world premiere of *Primary Trust*. Her other best-known Off-Broadway work is *Paris*, a working-class drama about underpaid employees at a big-box store. William Jackson Harper is too big for the set of [*Primary Trust*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25219-primary-trust-tickets). He is almost as tall as the church in Cranberry, the Rochester suburb where the play takes place. His head towers over the top of Wally’s, the tiki bar restaurant where he spends almost all his free time drinking copious mai tais. The door to the Primary Trust Bank, where he works, is fit for a mouse, not a man.

As Kenneth invites us into his mind, scenic designer Marsha Ginsberg invites us into this dollhouse-like, Mister Rogers-inspired world, where time stands still and circles around and sometimes rushes forward out of Kenneth’s control. 

Harper is on stage for the entirety of Eboni Booth’s carefully constructed play at [Roundabout Theatre Company](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/harold-and-miriam-steinberg-center-for-theatre), a task that may be daunting for a less adept actor. If Harper seems tired by the end, it’s because Kenneth is tired: tired of explaining himself to others, who he assumes can’t understand him; tired of chasing after his lost friend, Bert (Eric Berryman), the only person he knows will accept him; tired of feeling like an outsider in the majority-white place he's lived his whole life that doesn't know what to do with him, a seemingly neurodivergent man whose mother died when has a child. Though the play is a tight 95 minutes, it leaves the impression that we can only leave when Kenneth finds rest. 

Buoyed by a broader discussion of who society leaves behind and at the margins, *Primary Trust* is an intimate character piece handled with tenderness by director Knud Adams. Throughout, a musical accompanist (Luke Wygodny) slams a call bell to trigger jumps in time. Kenneth, anxious and eager to please, seizes these small do-overs, as if in a Suzuki acting exercise, then shrinks as he muddles his thoughts again and again. He can only say what he means when he’s talking to Bert or addressing the audience; the device only feels tired when Kenneth neatly explains the mystery of  Bert’s presence in his life.

Dressed a little like the *Sesame Street* character (in costumes by Qween Jean), the imaginary Bert is one clue that something in this world is off. Kenneth fears others will see him talking to Bert in public, but Corrina (April Matthis), a waitress at Wally’s who befriends him, implies their conversations are not had aloud. “You never talk to anybody,” she says of Kenneth’s time at the restaurant. “I’m the first person you’ve had a full conversation with.” Something in Cranberry is not quite real, even as the performances and relationships among the characters feel grounded.

The most gratifying element of *Primary Trust* is its ending, which at first hints at the tidy closure of stories, as if the characters are dolls about to be put back in their boxes. Kenneth earns a predictable achievement at work, says he might go finish his college degree, and begins to socialize with his colleagues instead of spending evenings alone.

But life is not picture-perfect like Ginsberg’s model town. “Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, screaming, scared that I’ve done something wrong,” Kenneth confesses. The turn isn’t macabre but realistic, a reminder that Kenneth’s journey isn’t over. It is only right now.

'Primary Trust' review — tender, grounded play lives on the margins of reality

Gene Feist and Elizabeth Owens founded Roundabout Theatre Company in 1965. With the support of the Steinbergs’ Charitable Trust, the Harold & Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre opened to the public in March 2004. The theatre is Roundabout's Off-Broadway home. The inaugural production at the venue was Lynn Nottage’s *Intimate Apparel*, starring Viola Davis.

The complex’s main stage is the Laura Pels Theatre, named after the Roundabout board member who previously funded the company’s first Off-Broadway home at the Criterion Center. The space originally contained 350 seats. During renovation, a 74-seat mezzanine was added to accommodate more of the company’s subscribers.

The theatre is widely used to produce premieres and revivals by established artists. In 2005, Roundabout completed work on the 62-seat Black Box Theatre in the lowest level of the complex. Besides being used as a rehearsal space and for educational programmes, it is also home to the Roundabout Underground initiative, which produces new works by emerging playwrights.

Roundabout Theatre Company also owns and operates three Broadway theatres: the [American Airlines Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/american-airlines-theatre), [Studio 54](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/studio-54), and the [Stephen Sondheim Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/stephen-sondheim-theatre), though it also rents these spaces out to non-Roundabout productions.
