Mon 3 Nov 2003 Now confirmed that Urinetown to close 18 Jan 04 It is now confirmed that the musical Urinetown will close on 18 Jan 2004 at the Henry Miller Theatre, due to impending construction on the site of the theatre. At closing, Urinetown will be the longest running show in the 86-year history of Henry Miller's Theatre. (after 25 previews and 965 performances) The times report that a new skyscraper is to be built in the area, which would incorporate a new 950-seat Broadway theatre. THe new building expected to open in 2008 The show was taking booking to 29 Feb 2004, but will now close 18 Jan 2004. It is reported that "an Off-Broadway move or a transfer to another Broadway house would be explored, but economics or lack of an available house may prohibit those options". Urinetown - The Musical, which opened on Broadway in September 2001, following a run Off Broadway, has book by Greg Kotis, Music by Mark Hollmann, Lyrics by Mark Hollmann & Greg Kotis. It is directed by John Rando and choreographed by Gillian Lynne. Synopsis: A neo-Brechtian absurdist musical comedy about a Gotham-like city in the midst of a drought so devastating that a malevolent corporation has been able to take control of all the toilet facilities. Greed, corruption and betrayal run rampant and the public desperatley seeks relief.
