New York Theatre Workshop announces Off-Broadway dates and casting for 'On Sugarland'

Casting and dates have been announced for the New York Theatre Workshop production of Aleshea Harris's On Sugarland, directed by Whitney White. Off-Broadway performances begin February 2 ahead of a February 13 opening night, and the show will run through March 13.

The ensemble cast is led by Kiki Layne as Sadie, Stephanie Berry as Evelyn, Billy Eugene Jones as Saul, Lizan Mitchell as Tisha, Adeola Role as Odella, and Jacob Daniel Smith as Addis. Additionally, Thomas Walter Booker, Xavier Scott Evans, Mister Fitzgerald, Josh Fulton, Charisma Glasper, Kai Heath, Shemar Yanick Jonas, and Mariyea collectively play The Rowdy.

On Sugarland is "a ritual reclamation of timeless grief" in which the people of the title community are seen persevering through difficult circumstances. Sugarland is a Southern cul-de-sac that includes three mobile homes and houses a storied history by way of folk art trinkets. Its residents gather each day to mourn and yell for the dead they've lost to a war, and amid it all, the young Sadie is searching for answers as to what really happened to her mother.

The play marks the second collaboration between Obie Award winners Harris and White after What to Send Up When It Goes Down, which was previously produced at The Public Theater and Playwrights Horizons.
