MTC presents Saint Joan starring Condola Rashad
The Manhattan Theatre Club, under the artistic leadership of Lynne Meadow, has announced the final production of its 2017-2018 season. Three-time Tony nominee Condola Rashad will star in a new production of Saint Joan, written by Nobel Prize and Oscar winner Bernard Show and directed by Tony winner Daniel Sullivan. Previews will still begin at Broadway's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on April 3, 2018, with an official opening set for April 25.
Synopsis: "Set in 15th century France, Saint Joan follows a country girl whose mysterious visions propel her into elite circles. When the nation's rulers become threatened by her popularity and influence, they unite to bring her down and she finds herself on trial for her life. This timeless and powerful play dramatizes the limits of an individual in a society dominated by overwhelming political and religious forces."
Additional casting and creative team information will be announced at a later date.
Saint Joan originally premiered on Broadway in December 1923. The MTC production will mark the play's eighth Broadway revival, having last been performed on the Great White Way at the Lyceum Theatre in 1993.
Condola Rashad was last seen on Broadway in Lucas Hnath's 'A Doll's House, Part 2,' for which she earned a Tony nomination for her performance as Emmy. She also earned Tony nominations in 2013 for 'The Trip to Bountiful' and in 2012 for 'Stick Fly' (her Broadway debut). She also played Juliet in the 2013 Broadway revival of 'Romeo and Juliet,' alongside Orlando Bloom. In 2009 she received a Theatre World Award for her off-Broadway debut in the Manhattan Theatre Club production of 'Ruined' by Lynn Nottage. Her screen credits include "Money Monster," "Billions," "Steel Magnolias," "Sex and the City 2," and "Smash."
Manhattan Theatre Club's 2017-2018 season also includes the current Broadway premiere of Prince of Broadway and the upcoming American premiere of the Royal Court production of The Children at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Off-Broadway, MTC presents The Portugues Kid, starring Jason Alexander and Sherie Rene Scott, Eve Ensler's In the Body of the World, and Dan Cody's Yacht, by Anthony Giardina, at New York City Center's Stage I, as well as Actually, by Anna Ziegler, and Donja R.
