Michael Urie to star in Torch Song Trilogy Revival

A new revival of Harvey Fierstein's Tony Award-winning play Torch Song Trilogy has been announced to run at the Second Stage Theatre off-Broadway, beginning previews on 26 September with an official opening in October 2017.

Drama Desk Award-winner Michael Urie will star as Arnold Beckoff in the production which will be directed by Moisés Kaufman with a full cast and creative team to be announced.

Synopsis: "It's 1979 in New York City and Arnold Beckoff is on a quest for love, purpose and family. He's fierce in drag and fearless in crisis, and he won't stop until he achieves the life he desires as a doting husband and a Jewish mother. Now, Arnold is back...and he's here to sing you a torch song."

Torch Song Trilogy originally opened on Broadway at the Little Theatre (now the Helen Hayes Theatre) on June 10, 1982, where it ran for 1,222 performances until 19 May 1985. The original production starred Mr. Fierstein in the lead role who went on to win the Tony Award for Best Play and Best Actor in a Play. It was adapted into a film in 1988 in which Mr. Fierstein reprised his role.

Speaking of the announcement, Harvey Fierstein said: "Thirty-five years?' I thought, 'It's time!' I'm thrilled that Second Stage Theatre will be reviving Torch Song Trilogy next season. In conversation, I've been encouraging director Moisés Kaufman to look at the play with fresh eyes. I would never think of rewriting the plays but have given him a newly edited text that reconceives the way I want the story told."

Torch Song Trilogy will run at Second Stage's Tony Kiser Theatre this fall. Tickets are initially available through subscription only.
