Matthew Broderick, Bianca del Rio, Amber Gray, and more to star in 'Tartuffe' off Broadway
Sarah Benson's production will capture the wit and buffoonery of Molière's play, in which Tartuffe fakes extreme piety to gain the affection of Orgon.
The full cast has been revealed for the world premiere of a new version of Molière’s classic comedy Tartuffe, which will begin performances at New York Theatre Workshop this fall.
Lucas Hnath (Red Speedo, Dana H.) adapts Molière's story, while Sarah Benson (Teeth) directs. The cast will include Tony Award winner Matthew Broderick (Plaza Suite) as Tartuffe, David Cross (Arrested Development) as Orgon, Emily Davis (Is This A Room) as Mariane, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Bianca del Rio as Mme Pernelle, Amber Gray (Hadestown) as Elmire, Ryan Haddad (Dark Disabled Stories) as Damis, Tony Award winner Francis Jue (Yellow Face) as Cleante, Tony Award winner Lisa Kron (Fun Home) as Dorine, and Ike Ufomadu (Ziwe) as Valére.
Tartuffe will feature scenic design by design collective dots (Oh, Mary!), costume design by Enver Chakartash (I Love You So Much I Could Die), lighting design by Stacey Derosier (Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole), and sound design by Peter Mills Weiss (The Headlands).
Benson's production will capture the wit and buffoonery of Molière's play, in which Tartuffe fakes extreme piety to gain the affection of Orgon, the head of a family Tartuffe stays with as a houseguest. When they catch on to his folly, Orgon’s family launches a campaign to expose and punish Tartuffe.
