Lincoln Center announces new season

Lincoln Center Theater has announced four productions to be produced in the Vivian Beaumont and Mitzi E. Newhouse Theaters during the 2013-2014 season.

 

The world premiere of Domesticated, a new play by Bruce Norris, featuring Laurie Metcalf, directed by Anna D. Shapiro, playing from 10 Oct 2013 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater.

Shakespeare's Macbeth, featuring Ethan Hawke in the title role, directed by Jack O'Brien, playing at the Vivian Beaumont Theater from 24 Oct 2013.

Act One, adapted and directed by James Lapine from the autobiography by Moss Hart, playing at the Vivian Beaumont Theater from 20 Mar 2013.

The world premiere of The City of Conversation, a new play by Anthony Giardina, directed by Doug Hughes, playing from 10 Apr 2014 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater.

In addition to these four productions, LCT3, Lincoln Center Theater's initiative to produce the work of new artists and to engage new audiences, will produce a season of three plays, to be announced, in the Claire Tow Theater.

Bruce Norris won the Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as London's Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for his play 'Clybourne Park.' His other works include 'A Parallelogram,' 'The Unmentionables,' 'The Pain and the Itch,' 'We All Went Down To Amsterdam,' 'Purple Heart' and 'The Infidel.'

Anna D. Shapiro directed Bruce Norris' 'A Parallelogram,' 'The Unmentionables,' 'The Pain and the Itch,' 'Purple Heart' and 'The Infidel.' Winner of the Tony Award for her direction of 'August: Osage County,' her other NY credits include the Broadway production of 'The Motherfucker with the Hat.'

Laurie Metcalf was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance this past season in 'The Other Place.' Her other recent stage credits include the Broadway productions of 'Brighton Beach Memoirs' and 'November' and the West End production of 'Long Day's Journey Into Night.'

Macbeth

Synopsis: When three witches tell Macbeth that he is destined to occupy the throne of Scotland, he and his wife choose to become the instruments of their fate and to kill the first man standing in their path, the virtuous King Duncan. But to maintain his position, Macbeth must keep on killing - first Banquo, his old comrade-in-arms; then, as the atmosphere of guilt and paranoia thickens, anyone who seems to threaten his tyrant's crown.
Creative team: sets by Scott Pask, costumes by Catherine Zuber, lighting by Japhy Weideman and original music and sound design by Mark Bennett.

Ethan Hawke will be reunited with director Jack O'Brien for this new production of a work that is widely considered to be one of Shakespeare's darkest and most powerful tragedies.

Ethan Hawke, star of the films "Before Midnight" and "The Purge," returns to Lincoln Center Theater where he was directed by Jack O'Brien in the Tony Award winning productions of 'Henry IV' and 'The Coast of Utopia,' for which he was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance as 'Michael Bakunin.'

Jack O'Brien directed the current LCT production of 'The Nance' and won Tony Awards for his direction of both 'The Coast of Utopia' and 'Henry IV.' His other LCT credits include 'The Invention of Love' (Tony Award nomination), 'Pride's Crossing,' 'The Little Foxes,' 'Hapgood' (Lucille Lortel Award) and 'Two Shakespearean Actors' (Tony Award nomination).

Synopsis: Chronicles the playwright/director's impoverished childhood and his determined struggle to escape poverty and forge a career in the theater which led to his collaboration with George S. Kaufman and their first great success, 'Once In A Lifetime.'
Creative team: sets by Beowolf Boritt, costumes by Jane Greenwood, lighting by Ken Billington, original music by Jeanine Tesori and sound by Daniel Moses Schrier.

James Lapine returns to LCT where he wrote the book for the musical 'A New Brain' (with music and lyrics by William Finn) and directed his play 'Twelve Dreams.' Director of the current Broadway revival of 'Annie,' he collaborated with Stephen Sondheim as author and director on the musicals 'Sunday in the Park with George' (Pulitzer Prize), 'Into the Woods,' 'Passion' (Tony Award) and the multi-media revue 'Sondheim on Sondheim.' With William Finn he has also collaborated on 'March of the Falsettos' and, 'Falsettoland' (later presented on Broadway as 'Falsettos'), 'Muscle' and the upcoming 'Little Miss Sunshine.' On Broadway he also directed 'Golden Child,' 'The Diary of Anne Frank,' 'Amour' and 'The 24th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.' His other plays include 'Luck,' 'Pluck and Virtue,' 'The Moment When,' 'Fran's Bed' and 'Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing.'

After their first collaboration on 'Once In A Lifetime,' Moss Hart continued his collaboration with George S. Kaufman on a series of now classic comedies which include 'The Man Who Came To Dinner' and 'You Can't Take It With You,' winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Hart's solo works as a writer included the play ;Light Up The Sky,' the book for the musical 'Lady in the Dark' and the screenplays for the films "Gentleman's Agreement" (Academy Award nomination), "Hans Christian Anderson" and the 1954 version of "A Star Is Born" which starred Judy Garland. As a director his credits include two Broadway musicals - 'My Fair Lady' and 'Camelot.'

Originally published in 1959, Act One was an extremely popular memoir. The landmark work, deemed one of the finest books about 20th-century American theater, quickly reached the top of best-seller lists and remained there for almost a year.

Synopsis: Tells the story of a political hostess, Hester Ferris, a behind the scenes mover and shaker in Washington, D.C., and of the political gains and personal losses that her choices inflict on her family over a period of 30 years, from the waning days of the Carter administration to the beginning of the Obama presidency.

Anthony Giardina is a playwright and novelist. His plays, including 'Living at Home,' 'An American Family,' 'Scenes from La Vie de Boheme,' 'The Beach,' 'Black Forest' and 'Custody of the Eye,' have been produced at Playwrights Horizons and Manhattan Theatre Club in New York and regionally at Arena Stage, Seattle Rep, Yale Rep, Long Wharf Theatre and the Cleveland Playhouse. He is the author of five novels, including his most recent 'Norumbega Park,' and 'The Country of Marriage,' a collection of stories.

Doug Hughes directed the LCT production of Richard Greenberg's 'The House in Town.' His recent New York credits include 'The Big Knife,' 'The Enemy of the People,' 'Born Yesterday,' 'The Royal Family,' 'Mauritius,' 'Doubt' (for which he won a Tony Award), 'Frozen' and 'The Whipping Man.'
