Job's Passion at Theater For The New City

Theater For The New City presents Job's Passion, by Hanoch Levin, at Theater For The New City's Cino Theatre from 9 Nov - 3 Dec 2006.

Job's Passion: A re-working of the Job story from the Bible. Job, who starts off enjoying good health, a large, happy family and many successful business ventures, quickly gets knocked off his perch.

A series of ever worsening bad news leaves him entirely divested of prosperity and family, no better than the many beggars who come scavenging bits and scraps from his table. As he gets assailed by plagues, his faith in God is challenged, although his Talmudic friends convince him to stay within his religion. However, when Roman soldiers arrive and proclaim a horrible death to whomever refuses to renounce their God, those same friends abandon him in order to save their own lives. Job, of course, will not give up on God and is brutally killed by the Romans. As he is dying, a circus arrives, and the play takes a Fellini-esque turn as the circus folk bargain with Job for his entry into the circus as the star attraction - people will pay a lot to see extreme human suffering.

Directed by David Willinger, Job's Passion features Colleen Jason, Michael Climek, E. John Okogun, Oliver Thrun, Zoe Mavroudi, Arturo Castro, Harvey Benjamin, Michael Vazquez, Primy Rivera, Eric Rasmussen, Freeman Borden and Ana Parsons.
