Impressionism posts early closing notices final performance on 10 May

The World premiere of Impressionism, a new American play by Michael Jacobs, directed by Tony Award-winner Jack O'Brien, has posted early closing notices, and will play its final performance on 10 May 2009. When the show closes it will have played 23 previews and 56 regular performances.

Impressionism opened at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on 24 Mar 2009, following previews from 28 Feb 2009, and was originally playing through to 5 Jul 2009.

The production opened to poor reviews: "There should be a Tony award for a category along the lines of a CPR Award: Kept Play Alive Against All Odds. That award would be shared by Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen."
(newyorkthatreguide.com); "undernourished" (NY Times); "a stupefying bore" (NY Post); "suffers from three major ailments: pretentiousness, trickery and triviality." (Bloomberg); "emotional piffle wrapped in fancy dress" (NewsDay); "a poorly conceived and clich-ridden mess" (Time Out NY).

Impressionism stars Tony Award winners Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen and also features Marsha Mason, Andr De Shields, Michael T. Weiss, Aaron Lazar, Margarita Levieva and Hadley Delany.

The production marks Allen's first return to Broadway since 'The Heidi Chronicles' in 1989, and Irons' first time on Broadway since 'The Real Thing' in 1984.

Impressionism is the story of a world traveling photojournalist and a New York gallery owner who discover each other and also that there might be an art to repairing broken lives.

The creative team featues Scott Pask (sets), Catherine Zuber (costumes), Natasha Katz (lighting) and Leon Rothenberg (sound).
