Mon 29 Mar 2004 "I Am My Own Wife" now booking to 3 Oct 2004 Doug Wright's I Am My Own Wife, starring Jefferson Mays , has extended its booking period by 3 months and is taking bookings to 3 Oct 2004. This off-broadway hit transferred to Broadway's Lyceum Theatre 11 NOv 2003, with an official opening of 3 Dec 2003, and received terrific notices from the popular press: BEN BRENTLEY of the NEW YORK TIMES says �The most stirring new work to appear on Broadway this fall.� CLIVE BARNES of NEW YORK POST says �Here is one of the performances of the season.� HOWARD KISSEL of NEW YORK DAILY NEWS says �Jefferson Mays' portrayal of the title character is mesmerizing.� ELYSA GARDNER of USA TODAY says �Wife is made consistently vital, though, by Mays' blazing dexterity.� GORDON COX of NEWSDAY says "Smart, engrossing production." Directed by Moises Kaufman, it is based on a true story, and inspired by interviews conducted by the playwright over several years, I AM MY OWN WIFE tells the tale of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a real-life German transvestite who managed to survive the Nazi onslaught as well as the following, repressive Communist regime.
