Helder Guimarães's one-man show The Hope Theory will make its Off-Broadway debut at New York City Center Stage II in a limited engagement from September 9 to December 6. The production is directed and produced by Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award winner Frank Marshall.
The Hope Theory blends sleight-of-hand illusions and tales from Guimarães' experience as a Portuguese immigrant coming to the U.S. at age 29 to pursue a career in magic. It was first presented in a sold-out and extended world premiere at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.
Guimarães has been recognized by The New York Times as “a master of illusions,” and is a World-Champion of Magic. Frank Marshall is best known for his film producing career, including classic series like Indiana Jones, Jason Bourne, and Jurassic World. This project marks the fourth collaboration between Guimarães and Marshall.
“The Hope Theory began with a question: what allows us to keep moving toward a life we cannot yet see?” said Helder Guimarães in a statement. “In this very personal show, I’ve learned that the more personal and specific a story is, the more room there is for other people to find themselves in it. I am excited to bring it to New York, a city built from arrivals, reinvention, and improbable futures, and to continue this journey with Frank and the extraordinary team who have shaped the piece with me.”
The creative team also includes scenic designer François-Pierre Couture, lighting designer Martha Carter, sound designer James Grabowski, composer Jeff Beal, and dramaturg Amy Levinson.
