Heathers the Musical to Shutter Early on 4 August 2014
The off-Broadway production of Heathers the Musical at the New World Stages has announced that it will close on 4 August 2014. At time of closing, the musical comedy will have played 17 previews and 145 regular performances. The production was originally booking to 7 Sept 2014.
Heathers the Musical originally opened on 31 March 2014 at the New World Stages, Stage 1, following previews from 17 Mar 2014. It features a book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O'Keefe, with direction from Andy Fickman and choreography by Marguerite Derricks.
The show currently stars Charissa Hogeland as Veronica, Dave Thomas Brown as J.D. and Elle McLemore, Jessica Keenan Wynn and Kristolyn Lloyd as the Heathers.
Director Andy Fickman said of the closure: "We are extremely grateful for the enthusiastic audiences and dedicated Heathers fans who have cheered on these extraordinary artists in what has been a dream come true for the entire team...These next few weeks will be a celebration of this remarkable achievement, with all of the talented people who came together to make Heathers a one-of-a-kind theatre experience."
Producers of the show also commented that they were "thrilled" to have established their brand with the New York run, which has opened many doors for future productions which they look forward to announcing very soon. The show opened to mainly positive reviews and was described as a "Rowdy guilty-pleasure musical" by the New York Times, "Ingenious, very funny" by the New York Post and "A fun and satisfying Off-Broadway treat" by the Daily News.
The musical brings the 1988 cult classic film to the stage and follows the pupils of Westerberg High as they are terrorized by a shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing junta: Heather, Heather and Heather. As outsider Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend J.D, the pair plot revenge against the girls, and ultimately the entire school.
