What is the US Open?

The U.S. Open is the highest-profile professional tennis tournament in the U.S., held annually in New York. Chronologically, it is the fourth and final of four Grand Slam tennis events after the Australian Open in Melbourne, French Open in Paris, and Wimbledon in London. A tennis player achieves the Grand Slam by winning all four tournaments in a calendar year.

Both male and female athletes compete in the U.S. Open, which consists of singles and doubles events for both single-gender and mixed teams.

Where is the US Open?

The U.S. Open takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in the NYC borough of Queens. Home to the U.S. Open since 1978, the venue contains 3 stadiums including the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest tennis arena in the world with a seating capacity of 23,771.

Other main arenas include the Louis Armstrong Stadium and the Grandstand. U.S. Open games are played across the Center's courts, with Arthur Ashe as the main stadium where the highest-profile games are played.

The most direct mode of public transportation to the Center is the subway or train; the venue is located within walking distance of the Mets-Willets Point stop on the 7 train or Long Island Railroad. Parking is available for those arriving by car.

When does the US Open start?

The 2025 U.S. Open begins on August 24 and runs through September 7. Two to three events are held on each day of the tournament, with the exception of the first and last days, which only host one event each (Qualifying Matches and Men's Final, respectively).

Morning events begin between 11 and noon and evening events between 6 and 7 p.m., with doors 60-90 minutes before. Select days also feature mid-afternoon events at 3 or 4 p.m. Visit the U.S. Open's official website for a complete daily schedule.

Who is playing in the US Open?

A total of 128 singles players and 64 doubles teams are competing in the U.S. Open to start. Among the notable players are Italy's Janik Sinner, the 2024 US Open winner, and Belarus's Aryna Sabalenka, respectively ranked No. 1 in the world in men's and women's singles tennis. 2022 US Open titlist Carlos Alcaraz and 2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff, ranked No. 2 worldwide in the same categories, are also competing.

Additional major players in the tournament include Iga Swiatek (2025 Wimbledon champion, No. 3 worldwide in women's singles) and Madison Keys (2025 Australian Open champion).

US Open visitor tips

Attending the U.S. Open this year? Here are some tips and tricks for navigating the venue and getting in the tennis spirit once you're there.

  • Try the Honey Deuce, the U.S. Open's signature cocktail since 2006. The vodka-based drink also features lemonade, raspberry liqueur, and a garnish of honeydew melon balls resembling tiny tennis balls.
  • Staying all day? The grounds contain multiple sit-down restaurants, including a steakhouse, in addition to quick-service concessions stands and bars.
  • Bags must not be larger than 12” W x 12”H x 16” L, with exceptions for accessibility accommodations. Backpacks are not allowed. There are no bag storage facilities on the grounds, but there are some located just outside select entrances that can be used for a fee.
  • If you're interested in picking up tennis yourself after watching the pros, there are Wilson and Nike shops on-site where you can purchase tennis gear, alongside traditional merch stands selling U.S. Open apparel, accessories, and souvenirs.
  • Arthur Ashe Stadium is the only arena with a roof. If there's rain in the forecast and you're spending your day elsewhere on the grounds, be sure to pack a poncho or hooded jacket!
